As I kept reading I noticed that she contains some characteristics that I would never would of guess. Daisy makes eye contacts with Winterbourne in the park for over than half an hour knowing he had double the age. Daisy has a flirty attitude and rather slutty. She demonstrates this the way she acts, the way she talks, the way she dresses. Daisy knows she is a very attractive girl and she uses this as a male poison. As you read you notice that Daisy knows how to flirt, knows how to act with a fully grown man. This can have various meanings but in my personal opinion is because she has experience. Daisy tells Winterbourne to take her to several places. For example the boat, and Daisy asks Winterbourne if he would like to fly to Rome with Daisy’s family and Daisy. This creates illusions for Winterbourne; it causes him to think that she actually wants a serious relationship with him. By Winterbourne thinking that Daisy wants a serious relationship with him, it causes him to create some feelings towards her. Daisy talks to Winterbourne as if she knew him all her life when it was just hours ago at the park. Yet, after everything when Winterbourne declines the offer of going to Italy with Daisy and her family she just get tired of him and leaves him. Also, Daisy is a very controlling person. Daisy makes Winterbourne wait outside the hotel and when she speaks she is very demanding and very direct making Winterbourne loose his pride. She controls the time they are together. At last, I believe that Daisy is a flirty, rather slutty, controlling, and a faker in order to get guys, and in my own experience I wouldn’t date a girl like that.
From my perspective, Daisy Miller might be rich but she doesn’t look like it. We can see that when the narrator says “ She was talking to him as if she had know him a long time “, (page 322) She is also a not very well educated person; instead of thanking Winterbourne, she starts to wine and to insult him. We can see this when Daisy starts saying to winterbourne” I think you are horrid”, (pg335). I can consider Daisy like a slot because she is seeing more than 1 man at the same time. We can also see that Daisy disloyal to winterbourne and Winterbourne is loyal to her. We can see that Daisy is disloyal to winterbourne when Mrs. Costello says:” The girl goes about alone with her foreigners. As to what happens further, you must apply elsewhere information.
In my point of view, Daisy Miller is as Mrs. Costello says she is. I do believe she is a new rich, and even though she may have lots of money she still has no class. She proves her uncultivated ways by exposing all of her social matters. A lady of her age should certainly not be talking about her ways with other men. Daisy, however has no problem sharing this type of information for a guy she barely has know for a couple of hours. “ I have always had… a great deal of gentlemen’s society” (page 324). This gives me a slutty impression of her and even though she may be good looking that doesn’t mean that gives her the right to go from one guy to another. Also, I find daisy to be manipulative and takes advantage of men. We can see how she plays with Winterbourne throughout the story. Especially when she wants to go on a boat ride with him. She wants Winterbourne to ridicule himself just for the sake of it. “ Oh, I hoped you would a fuss. .. I don’t care to go now” (page 333). Daisy is clearly playing with Winterbourne giving him fake hopes by telling him that they would have a nice time, but in the end she only lead him to disillusion and humiliation. I find this to be very mean and immature. I finally I find Daisy to be very social and easy to talk to. We can see this to the way she talks to Winterbourne at the beginning of the story “ She was talking to him “as if” she had know him a long time “ she had only known him for no more than one hour and yet she was able to talk to him about her family, issues, her flirts, and her interests with no sense of shame at all.
Alright Paula,

First, we see that her social capabilities are very wide, since in the first chapter we comprehend how she makes conversation with a completely stranger guy (Winterbourne). Lately, in the second chapter, we figure out, that her social skills extend also in the flirting branch. She has a tendency of talking with confidence about her personal life, and in many times, she mentioned that she “has been with many men”. Also, when they were at the Chillon Castle, she asked many deep questions to Winterbourne, which clearly shows that for her, “shame” is not a word.

Furthermore, in these two chapters, we see that this young lady is very mysterious. Her attitudes and her constant changes of mood, make her look very puzzling. For example, in the Castle, when Winterbourne told her he was almost leaving, she changed her mood very quickly and ended up being completely quite all the way back home. Also, we can see that Winterbourne thinks that she is a unique American lady, and he refers that he doesn’t know why. Finally, we could say, that many of Miss Miller´s characteristics that we infer as readers, are based on the reputation she has. The mystifying part is not only what Winterbourne thinks about her, but mainly why his aunt, Mrs. Costello refuses to know her, and disapprover her entire family. Many times during the second chapter, Mrs. Costello bewares Winterbourne of Daisy Miller.

Lastly, we know that Daisy Miller´s spontaneity is what captivates Winterbourne the most. Her very extravagant temperament and her readiness to any new situation make this character very original. For example, when she said that he wanted to visit the Chillon Castle, she was already expecting of Winterbourne to take her there, causing a sort of awkward position to the young man. This quality of Daisy could be what charms us the most as readers and obviously, Winterbourne as the main character.
Ari,

By Daisy’s actions, it is clear that she is a tease and a really indecisive person.

In the first chapters, it slowly becomes clear that Daisy is a tease when it comes to the relationship she has with Winterbourne. When they meet for the first time, Ms. Miller is such a tease, that she talks to Winterbourne but doesn’t even look at him. “This pretty American girl, however, on hearing Winterbourne's observation, simply glanced at him; she then turned her head and looked over the parapet, at the lake and the opposite mountains”(pg. 321) Even though Ms. Miller was interested in having a conversation and possibly flirting with Winterbourne, she played hard to get, and didn’t even look at him. Daisy is also a tease when she is talking to Winterbourne and says: “I have always had…a great deal of gentlemen’s society,” (pg. 324). This can be interpreted as an indirect tease, where Daisy is telling winterbourne that she has experience with gentlemen and that winterbourne might become part of that list of gentleman.

As one continues to see Daisy through Winterbourne’s point of view, it becomes obvious that Ms. Miller is a really indecisive girl. When daisy is talking to Winterbourne and Eugenio comes, we can clearly see her indecisiveness.
Whenever I think about some of the things that Daisy Miller does with regard to the time period, I think that she is very out of control and in a way she seems like a slut.
- 'the way that she appears and how her dress looks, things like that.'

When he first meets this pretty young America, decides to advance farther by initiating a conversation with her instead of retreating. At first, Daisy displays innocence and is very timid by simply glancing at him and turning her head in several directions without having direct eye contact with Mr. Winterbourne. She also displays embarrassment by smoothing out the knots on her dress, and gradually increasing the benefit of her glance. The narrator uses the following words to describe this pretty young girl: “Winterbourne had not seen for a long time anything prettier than this fair countrywoman’s various features-her complexion, her nose, her ears, her teeth…he was addicted to observing and analyzing it.” (Pg.322) Clearly, Mr. Winterbourne is very aware of her feminine beauty and her quiet and tranquil attitude. He studies and analyzes every move that this young girl makes. During the first and second parts of this story, Daisy Miller seems to be a soft, delicate, beautiful, feminine, young, flirty, and humorous girl that grabs Mr. Winterbourne’s attention instantly.

Even though Daisy Miller seems as an angel released from the sky, she reflects a new personality during the period of time that Mr. Winterbourne departs from Vevey. When he returns, he figures out that Daisy Miller has been very flirtatious with all types of gentlemen. Ms. Costello uses the following words to describe the young girl that he had fallen for a few months ago: “ She has picked up half-a-dozen of the regular Roman fortune-hunters, and she takes them about to people’s houses. When she comes to a party she brings with her a gentleman…” (Pg. 336) These words clearly reflect that Daisy is viewed as abominably because she takes older men to parties and hangs out with them often. In that society, seeing a young woman hanging out alone with an older man and without a chaperone, is clearly viewed as an inadequate action. Daisy Miller meets a pleasant man called Giovanelli, and is her new intimate friend. They go everywhere together, and the Roman crowd bestowed much attention at the odd couple. “He wondered what on earth had been in Daisy’s mind when she proposed to expose herself, unattended, to its appreciation.” (Pg.340) People obviously started viewing this young lady very badly because of her egregious and audacious behavior. Daisy Miller is used to doing what she wants, being the center of attention, and doesn’t really care about anybody’s opinion. It is clear that she has a greater authority compared to her mother and her brother because she takes her own decisions and she can’t look ahead for the consequences. This is why she decides to ignore to Mr. Winterbourne’s advice when she is going to leave with Mr. Giovanelli, even though she knows she’s taking the risk of catching the fever. Unfortunately, her innocence takes over her and this is why she dies. Daisy Miller is an interesting character because we really don’t know if this young coquette was always uncultivated and indelicate and Mr. Winterbourne was blinded by love and couldn't look at the truth; or if she changesd during the short period that she was away from Mr. Winterbourne.
Melanie,

For example, we can see how she’s manipulating winterbourne by making him make a fuss for her “Oh, I hoped you would make a fuss!”(333) Daisy is making a fool out of winterbourne and possibly making him feel uncomfortable just so she could get a few laughs. “ I hope you are disappointed, or disgusted, or something!”(333). We see from this that Daisy wants Winterbourne feel something and she’s just playing with him making him uncertain of his feelings for her. I how ever also find her to be a social outgoing girl, I just get the vibe from her that I could spend hours talking to her, maybe not about something meaningful or significant in any way, but I am certain that I would enjoy my time with her. I can see this from the way that she talks to Winterbourne. She has known him for no more than a couple of hours, and still “she talked to Winterbourne as if she had known him a long time.” Another characteristic that interests me about Daisy Is her uncertainty and unpredictability. At the beginning of the story she is fixed on going to the old castle in the mountaintops, then as the night progresses she suddenly changes her mind and decides that she is eager to go on a boat ride instead. Then out of the blue Daisy no longer wants to do neither but just wants to go home leaving Winterbourne (blueballs) “puzzled.” Finally I feel that Daisy is a bit of a tramp enjoying men’s company a little too much. .“I have always had…a great deal of gentlemen’s society,” (pg. 324). She’s not afraid about sharing this type of information with a man she just met, and to me, Daisy might be kind of shameless and the fact that she hangs out with too many guys, takes something away from her initial appeal.
Good Jaime,

Clear and pointedly written... A couple of mistakes that might have been avoided if you had proofread a little more thoroughly. 'Winterbourne' is always capitalized, "enjoying men’s company" should be "enjoying mens' company', and 'however' is one word.

Can you fix this?

Thanks,
