The 1963 march is considered the most significant demonstration of interracial coexistence that the United States has ever experienced. Millions of people witnessed the powerful message Martin Luther King sent out. “I Have a Dream” unified all races, all sexes, and social classes. It brought them together to a point of harmony instead of fragmentations within the community. This speech symbolized more than words, these were the hopes of a nation for equality and understanding. Civil rights are the freedoms and rights that each person within a community deserves. Each person has their civil rights ensured and granted according to the Constitution. SInce the 1960’s, many laws have been passed in order to ensure that each person is served with their civil rights. This is not entirely true however. Minorities such as women, Hispanics, Asian-Americans, people with disabilities and other problems are still in conflict with the civil rights.

http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=4794

The civil rights movement that spurred during the years after 1954 marked more than the simple elimination of racial limitations and borders. It took the nation into a transformation of American social, cultural, and political life. As the last passage proposed, the Constitution adopts the idea of equality and unity throughout the growth of the nation and society as a whole. The idea of racial equality caused a change within the government which would now focus on seeking unification. Human rights were now part of every American, not just the elite.

The words civil rights often bring to mind the image of Martin Luther King Jr and his intense and ground-breaking “I Have a Dream” speech. This story, however, may be clouded by the fact that before this march, police officers were chasing down black protestants through the streets and causing panic among this part of society.

It is not myth that African-Americans have always struggled for their rights. Many think the civil rights movement to have originally began way back during the times of slavery. It is those blacks people who originally fought for their freedom who came to define the powerful strive of generations to come.

Racism in medical care

In 2001, the medical institute provoked the U.S heath care system to allow any people to come into hospitals and be treated no matter what their race, ethnicity, gender or economic status. They have not yet changed anything. Research shows that health care is improving, there is a great gap in between the whites having medical problems than blacks, most likely because blacks cannot afford the same medication that whites can and are limited in nutrition and exercise. The government proposed to pay these medical care centers so that they could tend to treat the poor or black. It would be cheaper to pay that than pay for the consequences. Many different studies show that the groups of people that have more health problems are African Americans.

racism in schools

Even though in south Africa, the education and living standards are different in between blacks and whites, in the states, it does not change that much. After segregation, the African-american education has been lower than white people’s. this is even worse when there are children that are raised racist and bother the colored people in their schools causing depression. This can be changed if schools were more strict on reeducating these children because these racist kids sabotage some black kids’ learning chances. In some places in the states racism is increasing with racial jokes and comments. These people undermine the minorities causing them to be more hateful, violent, uneducated and create a sterotype about their people. We can help by giving these undermined people a chance in school without bullying them and treating them as aour equals because that is what they are.

Even though this may sound as a huge difference, African Americans have an extremely high rate. They are imprisoned at least eight times more often than European Americans. Approximately one third of the African American Men are under the supervision of the justice department. Also, about 12% of African American men are presently incarcerated.
The effects of racism in Schools

Racism in schools does damages and affects both individuals and the learning environment. Racism can have devastating effects on individuals. Some of them are insecurity, fear, and the inability to concentrate in classes. Some individuals have low self-esteem and feel insecure due to their background or customs. They feel different in a bad way and not part of the community. This sometimes leads to the rejection of an individual’s own background, culture and customs, as a desperate intent to “join” in. Many individuals who have been affewcted by racism lack the ability to concentrate in the classroom and have a hard time participating and speaking up during class due to their fear of being ridiculed if they make a mistake. Eventhough this is alerting, some indiciduals may even drop out of school due to their inhability to “join in” or be “normal”.

The first article written by David Crary talks about all of the issues and discrimination black men face in the U.S.A. David tells us all about how black men and women have fewer chances or opportunities in things such as jobs and education. He provides us with astonishing and discouraging facts like, “For example, it said unemployment for black men was 9.5 percent, compared to 4 percent for white men, while the jobless rate for black women was 8.5 percent, compared to 4.1 percent for white women.” It was surprising to see that such a difference was taken. David also talks about the difference between the amounts of money white people make compared to the amount black people gain. The difference was imbalanced and totally disproportioned. The amount of money a white American makes is much higher than the income of a black man; this also applies to women. One last thing this article talks about is how black Americans have a vague probability to go through high school, “By high school, blacks are more likely to drop out _ 15 percent compared to 12 percent for whites. For black males, the percentage rises to 18 percent compared to 14 percent of white males, the report said.” This is a serious issue; education is an extremely important aspect one must achieve in order to proceed.

Racial Prejudice

Racial Prejudice is something that affects the whole world. It is basically determined to “include fear, intolerance, separation, segregation, discrimination, and hatred”. This article tells us a very important aspect; it says that racial prejudice is no more than “ignorance”. Every human being comes from the same species, but what people truly see is the physical appearance. One only sees what skin color you have, what your hair looks like etc. In the end it all turns out to be superficial material. It is extraordinary to be able to look “at the uniqueness of individuals” and be capable of understanding that these differences are a way to show variety among people.

Racism has been around and a big issue since the colonial and slave era. Racism has fallen especially hard on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Mexican Americans, American Jews, Irish Americans, and of course there is racism against other immigrant groups and their descendants. Racial discrimination was completely removed in the mid-20th century. Racism came to be seen as it being socially wrong and it was morally repugnant. There is a wide discrimination against African Americans, Muslims and Latin Americans.

Civil Rights Movement.

As slaves got off the ships they were immediately taken to an auction block. They were sold to their new masters and taken away. But what if no one had fought against slavery? We would probably have slavery around today. But even after slavery was over black people in the United States were still not treated equally. Even after hundreds of years black people in the United States did not make the same amount of money that white people did. Black people were forced to drink out of separate drinking fountains that were dirty and had rusty pipes coming out from the sides of buildings. Racism was so bad that black people even had to sit in the back at restaurants, theaters, and even on buses. While Whites got better seats and better service. Blacks had the right to vote, but in the South Whites tried to stop them from voting. Slaves like Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, and Sojourner Truth lived the life of slaves but became some of the most important people and abolitionists in history, they fought to end slavery and won. During the 1960's, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, President Kennedy, and Jesse Jackson were all Civil Rights Movement leaders who fought for Blacks to be treated as equals.

It doesn’t matter if Latinos are born in America or not, they also are mistreated and discriminated by other organizations like the Border Patrol and the I.N.S. Furthermore, it is known that issues like unemployment, poverty and lack of educational opportunities are part of Latinos´ lifestyle. In addition, just like what happens to African American men, Latinos are put to jail by unfair reasons; in most of the cases because of racist drug laws and narco policies.
Is racism a political or moral issue?

We all know that racism and everything related to it, is very complex. Many perspectives and point of views can appear while arguing about this issue. In any society, the moral issues generate a social concern that always has to be dealt by the government (or at least in most of democratic governments). If there isn’t a good connection between this “cause and effect” matter, the problem will remain in our communities forever. Obviously, the government can’t control the thoughts of a person. But they do can “control” their actions. If there is actually a law that says no person will be denied from a job because of his skin color or race, then it should be applied. But in many places, people deny applicants for a job by saying that “this person doesn’t have the specific look, for the given specific establishment”. It also happens something like that were communities, buildings or apartments want to keep their homes “intact” meaning without a specific race. So, basically, where is the line between moral issues and political responsibility?

Cultural clash usually begins in kindergarten with non-black teachers who don't understand how to communicate with black children, specifically males in order to get a desired response. This stems from the way that white teachers are raised, which is very different than the way black children are raised. For example, white children are given choices and expected to chose accordingly, while black children are given directives. Black children do not always respond positively to choices that are given from the teacher. This is not out of disrespect, but out of not being used to have choices. In reality, when a teacher asks a student "do you want to come to the carpet for reading time" this is not a real question, but rather a rhetorical question. Black kids don't understand this and often get labeled as defiant at a young age. This follows them through all of their school years and they often end up dropping out of high school.

Another issue that affects education among African Americans is that they don't have stable family and home lives. This means that they don't have support in school and growing into being an adult with hopes and goals. Unstable families lead to attention issues, not getting homework done and stress related issues. Sometimes kids that are in low socioeconomic status situations need to move around a lot and then it take a while to get re-situated and used to a new area and new systems. Many times African American parents are not educated and cannot communicate with schools. All of these things can lead to failure in school.

Anup Shah also briefly brings into question the election of the first black president of the United States. Not only, after 234 years were black people neglected to participate to an election for presidency, but Barack Obama’s middle name, Hussein, is also brought into question with some claims of it being Muslim.

Eugene Kane, in his article called “racial issues are still on America’s front burner”, talks about the scenario of African American Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates being arrested by Officer James Crowley in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the month of August, 2009. This arrest kindled a national controversial discussion about race. Kane makes strong assumptions that “Black people almost always distrust white police officers who seem to have God complexes…White cops don’t take kindly to angry black men yelling at them when they’re trying to get answer,” when expressing his onion on the situation of the African American being arrested by a white cop. According to Kane’s research, Gates, the professor, was not used to a police officer “not recognizing his privileged status and reacted like most privileged people do: with annoyance.” The cop had decided to take down this small black man that was not giving him enough respect, and had to be “taught a lesson”. Kane transitions this story to the election of African American President Barack Obama, who “signaled the coming of a colorblind society.” He discloses the anonymous opinions of people who incline to defend Corley, the officer, and criticize Gates since he is a black man in a prestigious exclusive community. He ends his article with his statement of not believing that just because Obama is in power in the White House, black journalists should stop writing about racial issues at all.

Let's fix the following:

1)'Shah writes about racism issues...'

2) '...written by Anup Shah expressed racism in different continents...'

3) '...against the minority,...' (which minority?)

4) 'Horrible incidents such as 9/11 are a cause for racial discrimination as it has been reported that some Americans attacked members of the Sikh community, a Muslim community, which resulted in deaths.' (I think that we can make this much shorter.)

5) 'when expressing his onion on the situation of the African American being arrested by a white cop.' A couple of mistakes here, one terribly obvious, and we could make this a more efficiently written sentence.

6)'...take down this small black man that was not giving him enough respect...'

7) Try to clean this up a bit: 'He discloses the anonymous opinions of people who incline to defend Corley...'

8)'...criticize Gates since he is a black man in a prestigious exclusive community.' Really? Is that true, that he actually criticizes the man for living in a white neighborhood?

Thanks,
