Meanwhile the story carry’s on, one finds out that it is mid February in approximately the year 1930. It is a cold month where no sunny days appear, and only snow descends. This is a very important aspect of the story, and without it the story would be completely different. Bigger has been hiding his oppressive fault of killing Mary for about two days. When he is finally caught, he jumps outside his bedroom window and starts his getaway. In the moment he lands on the floor, and he realizes that his hands and feet are cold. This feeling develops more and more throughout the story. He gets to a point where he is so cold that he can’t feel his fingers, he has to look at them in order to realize that they are still there. This is one of the things that make Bigger get caught so quickly; if it were summer he would probably be more agile and not be so weak that he could hardly move. If this story had taken place in a different year, it would also make a big difference. This was a time in which black people were discriminated and not taken in consideration. This is also a mayor aspect in the story because if it weren’t for this, then Bigger wouldn’t have acted the way he did. One can assume that his actions are a reflection of his society, so if people hadn’t treated him the way they did he would probably be a different person. He wouldn’t have felt uncomfortable being around Jan and Mary and he wouldn’t have cared if Ms. Dalton saw him in Mary’s bedroom, which equals to, not having killed Mary. Bigger travels to Hyde Park to get a job with the wealthy white family, Mr. and Mrs. Dalton. His life has taken a split, one side white, the other black and he goes back and forth between fearing and hating both worlds.

Forget about the stability of our society, for it is not a utopia, but for the most part, we chose to neglect our past and forgive and forget. Not that every person choses to be part of this difference, of this new perception of the world as one, but as a whole community, as a world, we are not the same anymore. We have entered a new age, a new wave of social recognition and status. A black person, or any other race for that matter, is as capable as I am, is as good as I am, is worth a human life just like mine. If we enter an age of segregation, or racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, of few jobs and little, specified opportunities, the overall scheme changes. Bigger lives in a world of oppression and uncertainty. He belongs at the back of the bus, he belongs to different bathrooms, and he belongs to different standards. Bigger is less than everyone else in a period of desperation and legal social segregation. No longer do we face times like these, because maybe we do live in a society that still holds resentment or hatred for other races, but that is only contained within people who refuse to accept these new world and this new wave of perspective. The setting for this story is stop-on and the story would otherwise lose impact had it been in a place in which racial discrimination is something that has been left in the past. Not only would it lose impact, but Bigger would not face the same fear as he does towards this “white” society. The setting can be defined as the context and environment in which something the story takes place, or the physical position of something.

The book Native Son takes place in the late 1930’s, where many of the costumes and ways of life are totally different from now a days. This story takes place on a time where the discrimination is a day to day occurrence in society, and were your “place” and limitations in it are mainly defined by your skin color.

A change in setting would totally affect the story, its outcomes, its climax, and the character’s actions. Because of the setting, this story is greatly affected by discrimination. With out discrimination, fear, one of the most important themes of the whole book, would not exist as concrete. Without fear, most of Bigger’s actions would be different, like his interactions with whites. If Bigger wouldn’t be afraid of whites, he would have an easier time dealing with the Dalton’s. Due to his past experiences with whites, Bigger has the idea that all whites are mean, superior, and want to harm him. Even though the Dalton’s may be different, Bigger has a hard time dealing with them from the beginning. if such fear didn’t exist, Bigger would have an easier time dealing with whites, which would have a great positive effect of his life; Improving his economic and social status, and his life style.

In every way we analyze it, it is clear that a story’s setting is one of the most important components, which has the power to affect the story completely. This story also takes place in the Dalton mansion where Bigger works for the Dalton family. If this story would have been during a different time and place it would have been completely different for many reasons. The main reason would have been the racism and segregation there was at this time. The author of this story, Richard Wright, shows us these factors through both black people and white people's eyes. We can see it through black people's eyes when Bigger, Gus, and Jack talk and express themselves about the white people. We see it through white people's actions by the place they have chosen to live, for example. White people have a much better way of life than blacks do at this time. This is shown when the book begins by the way Wright describes Bigger's family's apartment as "cramped and divided by a curtain" but then as we get into the book we can see the difference of lifestyles when Wright talks about the luxurious life that the Dalton family lives. The setting and time does make an effect on the story because for example if it would have taken place in the 21st century in the country side people would have seen Bigger's actions and consequences differently and the first thing that people have would have thought would not necessarily be that it was a black man. People would think it could have been anyone. The actual setting doesn't change what Bigger did because what Bigger did would have been seen very wrong in any time and place. There is a lot of killing in the world today, but in the world today people don't get blamed for the skin color, anyone could do anything.
Nikki,

This component involves things such as periods of time, places, social factors, moods and atmospheres. In the novel “Native Son” the setting resembles to the late 1930’s, where social disruption appears because of the bad economic condition the United States was holding. During this period of time, we know that social segregation was still legal. Even the actual place is never mentioned in the book, we assume that the novel unfolds in the state of Chicago.

Richard Wright, the author, also contrasts the social statuses between the blacks and the whites. We are capable of seeing this comparison in the novel, when Wright describes the ghettos, the poorness and the misery black people lives in. It also infers a sort criminality coming from the black people. In the other hand, Wright illustrates a fancy and luxurious world the Dalton’s (white people) occupy. This clearly, gives a setting of how the racial stereotypes and social position affects the whole development of the story. Furthermore, a political environment that rises as a result of the economical situation and the need of solutions creates a mood of controversy and debate.

For the novel’s evolution, there is no other type of setting that could actually work as well. The whole setting of “Native Son” frames a situation that eventually would take part of Bigger’s decisions and the consequences they have. For example, the race conflict (racism, stereotypes and discrimination) creates a fear deep inside Bigger, that later one it transforms into hatred. Also, the communist political view Jan has and the pamphlet he gave to Bigger, are a big portion of the evidence the detective is trying to compile. Finally, the controversial feeling politics, xenophobia and poorness generate in the novel, will join the controversy Bigger creates himself with all the decision he takes and all the acts he makes.
Great Ari,

If the setting would have been set in a different time and place it would not have the same effect as it does now. Bigger, a black man is living a life of fear and anger towards white people. He does not see white people as individuals but as an oppressive force. Bigger is afraid of his family's poverty and of white's who control his life. During the novel, Bigger takes a job working for a rich white man named Mr. Dalton. Right off the bat, we can see Bigger feeling overwhelmed and a sort of hate towards white people as he walks through the white neighborhood. Bigger has mixed feelings once he arrives at the Dalton's home and the moment he steps foot into the house, he feels people staring at him. If Bigger would have been working at a white family's house, he wouldn't feel this hate and fear regarding his new job and boss. One of the main events that happen in his new job is the first night where Bigger had to drive Mary, the Dalton's daughter and her communist boyfriend, Jan to a restaurant on the south side. They insist Bigger to eat with them and at the end of the night they end up drunk. Bigger drives Mary back to the house and notices she is really drunk so he helps her go up the stairs to her room. Bigger suddenly feels aroused and intimate towards a white young woman, which never happens to black people. All this gives Bigger a sense of power and identity that he has never felt before. Then comes Bigger killing Mary and then his girlfriend Bessie. If Bigger wouldn't have had such a harsh stereotype on whites and their hate towards black, he would not have felt in a type of "war" working with these white people. Effects would be different if the place in this story would have been in a black neighborhood and Bigger working for black people. He would not have felt overwhelmed and such a strong feeling on being with a white woman alone. Most importantly, Bigger wouldn't have the urge to "keep up" or keep fighting against whites, trying to prove some sort of point the blacks are at the same, or higher level than whites. If the time would be different, some effects could have changed also since during the time this novel takes place, the racism that blacks have toward whites and whites toward blacks is a very strong and delicate argument. As of today, this stereotype that whites are superior has changed a lot and is definitely very different from the stereotype people had in the 1930’s. If the story would have taken place today or two years ago, Bigger would not have felt such a hate towards white people because he would have known that many blacks these days are educated are at the same intellectual level as whites.
Melanie,
