Frist, the detectives were suspicious of him because he ran away as soon as they found the bones, earring and hatchet head in the furnace. Doing so made him look guilty because if he wasn’t guilty, he wouldn’t have run away so suddenly. Instead he made it obvious that he was involved by running away. Otherwise, he would have stayed and defended himself against the detectives.

One of Biggers biggest mistakes in killing Mary was that he put her and the hatchet in the furnace. Neither Mary’s bones nor the hatchet disintegrated in the fire and this was what actually got him caught. He should have not put the hatchet in the fire. Also, he should have taken Mary’s bones out of the fire after she was mostly burned. If neither one of these things were in the fire clogging the air vent, then the detectives wouldn’t have found Mary.

Biggers plans to get away killing Mary were a disaster. He made several mistakes. First, he blamed Jan which was stupid, because Jan probably had an alibi. Jan had to somewhere at the time of Mary’s murder. Other than that, he didn’t really have a great plan. He did not have any plan to escape. He just went to an abandon apartment and stayed there. He should have gotten out of town immediately when he stole the first newspaper and read about it, or he could have gone to a place where everyone had already searched.

In Book Two, Bigger shows us that he is not a very good planner. He does this by not having a plan whatsoever. He merely acts on impulses. This leads to not making planned decisions and eventually his capture. He himself makes it obvious that he is the culprit.
Great Will,

He has been trying very hard to hide her body and make sure no one gets near the furnace so they don’t see the remains of the bones. His plan started to fail at the moment when he decided to hide her body at the Dalton's house and not escape after the murder. Leaving the body at the Dalton's furnace was the first big mistake he made because he was one of the only people who were able to go into the furnace, and since he is black the Dalton family was obviously going to think of him as the first suspect. After the murder Bigger gained a lot money for doing what he did. Since he gained all of this money to "help" his family it would only have been smart enough for him to flee the town, and not only flee himself but take his family along because his family would have suffered the consequences that he may have not suffered at that moment but at some point in time when they found him. It was pretty obvious what Bigger did and it was going to be really hard for him to "win" if they actually did make a trial because just like in "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, Bigger is black and the other family is white so of course that, that is a disadvantage to Bigger, but he obviously never thought about that.
Thanks Nikki,

Out of all his mistakes, writing a note asking for more money, and chasing Jan with a gun were some of the greatest mistakes that caused his plan’s failure. In order for his plan to succeed, Bigger should have also escaped after the murder, and disposed the body somewhere else besides the Dalton’s home.

One of Bigger’s biggest mistake was to write a note looking for more money. Bigger’s greediness outranked his common sense and caused him to write a ransom note. This stupid action was responsible for the failure of his plan, since this ransom note proved that Mary was really in trouble and not just missing. This ransom note also left many unnecessary evidence and traces, and was frankly responsible for Betsey’s death. If Bigger hadn’t written this note, Betsey wouldn’t have been involved. Another of Bigger’s biggest mistake was to chase Jan with a gun. “ Jan came forward again and Bigger drew his gun. Jan stopped; his face whitened.” (PG 197) This Idiotic action made Jan suspicious against Bigger, and made Jan “point fingers” at Bigger in the murder investigation. Jan’s testimony arose many suspicions towards Bigger that would not had happen if he would have handled Jan differently.

In order for his plan to be successful, Bigger should have escaped after the murder, and disposed the body somewhere else besides the Dalton’s home. The day after the murder, Bigger should have escaped. Due to the murder, he had a lot of money. Because of his skin color and the death of a white rich girl, it is obvious that if they find out that Bigger is the killer, he will punished for life, without being questioned beforehand. With the money that may help his family have a “better” life, he should’ve escaped with his family, since the discovery of the murder of a white rich girl is inevitable. Due to this time period, escaping was really easy and a way to avoid the punishments of a crime. If Bigger would’ve disposed the body somewhere else besides the Dalton’s home, his plan would have a better opportunity of succeeding. If he would have disposed the body elsewhere, the body would have probably still been missing. Also, the body in the furnace implicates that the murderer is someone close to the family, or one that had access to the home. In other words, this location made Bigger a greater target in the murder investigation, since he is the “new”, black guy who had access to the furnace.
Great Erik,

But what were some of the major mistakes Bigger did that lead to such findings? First, clearly, we are now capable of realizing that a furnace is not hot enough to burn and dissolve some bones and a earring. In the scene, where the reporters got at Dalton’s house, and Bigger was supposed to clean the furnace, by mistake, he gets all to room filled with smoke. After the smoke clears out, there are a couple of bones and a earring laying on the floor. If you are trying to hide a body (which I hope you are not), you definitely should disappear all of the evidence. Then, another mistake that led to these consequences is the note he sent asking for 10,000 dollars, which he signed as “Red”. In the letter he wrote: “Blink your headlights some. When you see a light in a window blink three times throw the box in the snow and drive off. Do what this letter says” (pg 203). Undeniably, this letter wasn’t necessary at all, and it is this same letter, the leads to big and bad consequences. By the time he sent it, Jan was already in jail, meaning that there was already a person found guilty. But, since he sent the note, the Dalton family order to take Jan out of jail, since they just had found the real responsible for the acts. Just right after that, Jan says that he has many arguments capable of defending himself from Bagger’s accusations, making all the press pay much more attention on Bigger. As we know, it is the press the ones that found the bones and the earrings, and it is also the pressure the press was putting over Bigger, that in my opinion, made him get crazy and anxious right after the press found such discoveries. He got interrogated by the detective, and harassed by the press. “Then, before Bigger knew it, the men had their bulbs in their hands again, aiming at him.” (pg. 247). This quote illustrates how the detective in combination with the press, create a sort of pressure, that after a while, actually affects Bigger’s deportment. Finally, it thinks that the attitude he takes right after they found the bones and the earring is not the right one. I mean, the press was not accusing him (yet), but he got extremely nervous and started getting afraid again. Eventually, he jumps out of the window, and tries to run away. This last behavior was the stupidest decision he could have taken, since by then, the whole press, the family and the detectives, know that he is the murderer of Mary. Running like he did, it is like a direct confession.
Thanks Ari,

Mistakes that would be critical for him in the long run. One major mistakes that Bigger committed was to hide in Mary’s room when he was leaving her in bed. Due to high levels of alcohol, Mary was in a very sensible and vulnerable position. Not having control over her body and mind, Mary was now in control of Bigger’s actions. Taking advantage of a drunk lady was Bigger’s mistake in a smaller context. When Bigger decides to hide, he had something set on his mind already. This was Bigger’s first mistake because he was never supposed to take Mary to her room in the first place. Due to his first mistake, everything went downhill for Bigger. Bigger’s second mistake was to decide to keep Mary with her mouth shut when her mother came in. Instead of facing the consequences, he tries to avoid them, causing a worse case scenario. In order to keep Mary with her mouth shut, Bigger puts a pillow on her face. An act that would of been smart if the victim wasn’t killed in the act. Unfortunately for Bigger, he did kill Mary. Living a life of fear and trying to avoid problems, Bigger committed his second mistake now. When it came to disposing Mary’s body, Bigger did something truly wrong. He didn’t follow the steps to dispose the body correctly. Not doing his chores, made it impossible for Bigger to dispose the ashes. The policemen then found Mary’s bones and because of this, Bigger had to face the consequences of second degree murder. However, the biggest mistake is when Peggy asks him to clean the ashes out in and make a better fire in the furnace in order for there to be more heat upstairs. She described how "There's not enough heat upstairs. You'd better clean those ashes out and make a better fire," (page 247). However, Bigger wanted to wait for the men in the basement to leave before we could clean the ashes, so instead he opened the lower door with all the grey and white ashes and sift it down until the men left. "No air could get through. Maybe he could sift the ashes down more and make that do until the men left? He would try it," (page 248). However, the air still didn't get through, so his mistake was to shove more and more coal in the furnace so the air would carry all these ashes through the air vents where the heat should travel into the basement where all the men were standing and talking. All the ashes being carried out of the furnace exposed a bone and an earring on the floor. This caused the men to see it and reveal that mary was in the furnace, which then they greatly suspected that Bigger had placed Mary in it and started to search for him. What he could have done differently is tell Peggy that he wasn't feeling to well because of some reason and that he would change the fire in a while, which knowing Peggy, she would presumably let him go to his room and then, when the men left, he could have changed the fire and if the same thing were to happen he'd be able to cover it since he'd be the only one in the basement. Another thing he could have done is just run away with the money he had stolen form Mary's purpose, but because of his pride and new vigor of power and the idea that he could get a lot more money drove him to plan out the ransom and didn't run away, although he always hesitated whether he should flee or not. So out of all the things Bigger had done to cover Mary's death, sifting the ashes and adding coal to the furnace which caused the ashes to carry the bone and remains of Mary to the basement floor was the worst mistake that Bigger made that ruined his plans and caused him to be chased by the authorities.
Alright Daniel,

Good reasoning; now let's speak of grammar and syntax...

1) Remember-- always write in the present tense when speaking of literature.

2) Let's clean this up, make it simpler... 'However, the air still didn't get through, so his mistake was to shove more and more coal in the furnace so the air would carry all these ashes through the air vents where the heat should travel into the basement where all the men were standing and talking.'

3) Where is the mistake? '...is tell Peggy that he wasn't feeling to well because...'

4) Experiment with a semi-colon or two in fixing up this endless sentence: 'What he could have done differently is tell Peggy that he wasn't feeling to well because of some reason and that he would change the fire in a while, which knowing Peggy, she would presumably let him go to his room and then, when the men left, he could have changed the fire and if the same thing were to happen he'd be able to cover it since he'd be the only one in the basement.'

5) 'he had stolen form Mary's purpose' ?????

6) So you identified his mistake... no can you attach an attitude or character trait that led him to make this mistake?
