It has been a story of my complete interest. I kind of relate to one of the characters in the story. Many times it has happened to me my parents warn me not to date someone because they feel the person is not meant to be with me. Either from their family background, or the reputation the person has created himself, or just because of the person’s age. Of course, I ended up disobeying my parents, and the times I have disobeyed my parents I’ve ended being disappointed and hurt from the situation. Winterbourne knew Daisy Miller was not for him, but he still wanted to be with her because there was just something so attractive of her. Even his aunt was against their being together. At the end, he ends up being disappointed. I would have liked reading the rest of the book to see if he learned from his mistakes, because they say humans are the only animals that trip over the same rock twice. I relate a lot to this story, and that’s why I liked it the most.

The story that has been the least successful story has been “Swimmer”. Not only was it really hard to understand, but I thought the whole story was a glib; it was pointless. It doesn’t really have a relevant problem, it talks about his foolish journey in which the plot is based on his moving from pool to pool, until he reaches his home and realizes he is not young anymore.. My question is; did it take him all the swimming to realize that? I believe that if the story is a metaphor of something else, or if it has a subliminal message I didn’t really understand any of it. I also believe that if the story didn’t have a message nor was it a metaphor, the story doesn’t really have logic. What so ever it may be it was just really hard to read, and I didn’t understand the story as good as I understood the other stories.

These two stories are both similar and different at the same time. I feel they are different in the sense that “Daisy Miller” was more concise, and you understood everything at the time. Unlike “The Swimmer” which gave little information and gave you the space for you to assume or infer about the ending of the story. The characters also assume different personalities. For example, in “ Daisy Miller Winterbourne is the victim which was hurt and turned down by Daisy. In “The Swimmer” the main character was the “pimp” that would have different girlfriends and he would be the one playing with their feelings. The characters also differentiate in ages as well. The Swimmer was an old guy, unlike Winterbourne who was young and naïve. Some of the similarities are that both characters end up being disappointed at the end. Winterbourne is disappointed of Daisy, and The Swimmer is disappointed of his age.
Thanks Paula,

I think that the most successful story that we have read is “How It Feels to Be Colored Me”, not only because it is well written but it also has a clear and positive message. This story is about one girl’s positive feelings about being who she is. She is proud of whom she is and she isn’t afraid of what other people think. She has a sense of being that she always carries with her. “At certain times I have no race, I am me.” Here we can see the confidence that she has for who she is and what she looks like no matter what other people thought about her.

Then we read short stories that were not as successful. The least successful one being “The New Dress”. This story wasn’t as well written as “How it feels to be colored me” and the girl in this story isn’t as secure about who she is. I also think that this stories message isn’t as positive and uplifting. It talks more about Mabel’s insecurity and how she feels that she needed to be complemented to actually be pretty. “I feel like some dowdy, decrepit, horribly dingy old fly”. This quote shows exactly how she feels about herself and how she looks.

There are some similarities between the two stories. For one thing both women are doing something that they have never done before; they are going into the unknown. They are facing new problems and challenges, but the way that they face them are completely different. Zora, from “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” is brave and headstrong. She isn’t afraid of what other people think about her, because she knows who she is. Mabel, from “The New Dress” on the other hand is afraid of what people think and she is nervous about fitting in. She wants people to accept her. I think it is clear that there are major differences between the two stories. But there are also some key similarities.
Not bad, Linsey,

I think this because a good story has to have the reader hooked on with the story. In the swimmer the rising action is too long and too repetitive. Besides the fact that the rising action is so long, the climax and the resolution are not well written. It is such that the climax as well as the resolution and the ending are all smashed into the last paragraph of the story. So in theory with a long and boring rising action, a short not well constructed climax and a resolution that is a sentence long. This poor structure makes the story not interesting and bores the reader, hence the story cannot be counted as a successful story.

The most successful story, in my opinion is called "a good man is hard to find". In this story there is a good introduction. Hooking the reader into the story. Then the rising action is filled with suspense, making the reader get into the story, and making the story interesting to read. Then the climax is very intense. Thus making another reason why this story is a successful one. Another one of these reasons is that it has a well written and a resolution that fits into the story. So all these factors combined together plus the intensity and the suspense of the story, make the story “a good man is hard to find” a successful story.

In theses two stories have few similarities. One of these similarities that the two stories both talk about an adventure. However “a good man is hard to find” has more suspense than “the swimmer”. This makes “a good man is hard to find” way more interesting that “the swimmer. Differences go on between these two stories. Fairly obvious ones like in “a good man is hard to find” there is violence and in the other story there is no violence. Then there are more complicated ones mentioned beforehand, like in “a good man is hard to find” the rising actions has more peaks and in “ the swimmer” the rising action is long and dull. So this is the comparison between the most successful story this year and the least successful.
Joseph,

This is because it expresses Zora Neale’s pride and uniqueness through her precise speech, careful details and feelings about her childhood. Zora’s objective is to inform all others that no matter what your background and race is you should feel proud and embrace it and never let others bring you down. The details about Zora’s heritage really reflect that although she may be different, she does not consider it a disadvantage. Her story makes it clear that she wants to be recognized as an individual and not as a colored person. In today’s world racism is a common topic that always genererates serious discussion. Zora Neale Hurston vocally speaks out to all human races, no matter where you they from. She embraces her culture and makes sure she informs all others that the color of one’s skin color should not have an effect on people’s rights, responsibilities and accesses to opportunities.

The least successful story is "Rope". During the story the characters remain unnamed and un-described .The author also effectively tells the story from one of the character's point of view; that of the wife. This has a distracting effect on the reader making it frustrating to engage in the reading. The story effectively demonstrates what can happen in a relationship without mutual respect and a conscious effort to understand the other's point of view. Unfortunately, these "fated" relationship are not uncommon in our society. Now a days when a "fated" relationship takes place it quickly turns into a divorce or a domestic violence dispute. However, the author was trying to imply that marriage is thought to be an example one generally good relationships. It offers a reference point for objectively evaluating one's own culpability in a relationship gone bad. It can also provide an insightful look at how not to handle a problem in a relationship.

These two stories are very differentt in several ways. In “How it feels to be colored me” the author writes in a direct way. She expresses her points of views and feelings from the very begining. She makes her opinions clear enough for the reader to understand were Zora stands in society. It focuses on the main idea and doesn't mingle nor pretend to distract the reader from the plot. On the other hand "Rope" uses writing techniques that make the reader question themselves if there are actually understanding the plot. I appreciate the author’s use of dialogue which makes it easier for the reader to see the individual perspective of both characters but nevertheless it fails to capture the reader’s attention.
This is good, Paulina,

The climax of this story is when the family meets the "Misfit" who escaped from jail, and the grandma already knew about him. Grandma realizes and tells to everyone that he is the "Misfit". Some more successful than others. The most successful story is "How It Feels To Be Colored Me" by Zora Neil Hurston. This story was successful as not only is it interesting and well written, but it has a positive message. Zora, the narrator, is a black woman who is proud of her ethnicity. This is not a typical story, as Zora shows the reader an alternative approach and point of view on this ethnicity. Zora is a role model, she is a very positive and inspiring character. "Don’t let white people use the force of discrimination to drag you down to your knees," (pg. 983). She teaches several lessons throughout the story. It doesn't talk only about racism, but it also talks about believing in oneself and having faith. Not only is this a good story, but it is atypical. It also has a positive and inspiring message.

The least successful story that has been read in class is "The Swimmer" by John Cheever. This story is about a man who swims through all the swimming pools in his town until he reaches his home. This story is very confusing. It is written in an odd manner in which it ends in the climax, and does not have a clear resolution. The story is not very interesting, so it does not hook the reader, there is nothing about it that would make the reader eager to keep reading it. This story does not have a clear message nor conclusion. It is a fail of a story.

Both "The Swimmer" and "How It Feels To Be Colored Me" are very different stories. The stories have a different structure; the swimmer ends with the climax and does not have a clear resolution. "How It Feels To Be Colored Me" has a clear, positive message. "The Swimmer" in contrast, does not have a clear message nor resolution. The most admiral aspect of "How It Feels To Be Colored Me" is it's message. Zora narrates in a way that the reader may feel connected to her, it is almost personal. Neddy, however, is not a character who the reader can connect nor relate to. These stories differ greatly in key components.
OK Sol,

The most successful story has to be “The Man who was almost a Man”. This story has to be the most successful because it relates to how teenagers act. Teenagers like to do things that they are not supposed to do for some reason and when they do it, they mess up. That is what happened to Dave in the story. He wanted a gun only because he wanted to be respected, he didn’t want to use it to kill someone, but he ended up killing Mr. Hawkins mule, Jenny. This story teaches teenagers to not do things that they shouldn’t be doing because they can get in very big trouble.

The least successful story is The Swimmer. This story made no sense to me. While I was reading the story I was thinking “Why would this guy swim until he gets home? This guy isn’t normal.” It was very boring; I didn’t want to continue reading the story because it was too boring. The story was also hard to understand because the author used a weird technique to write the story; I couldn’t follow the story as I read. The main character, Neddy, was a confused guy, he didn’t know that there was nobody in his house. This story doesn’t teach anything to anyone, all it is about is a guy who is very lost swims in every pool he finds until he finds his house, which is empty and he has no family with him.

I don’t see how these stories are similar to each other, but they are very different from each other. One of the differences is that “The Man who was almost a Man” teaches something to you after you read it, on the other hand “The Swimmer” doesn’t teach anything to you. The main character of “The Swimmer” is crazy and lost, and in the story “The Man who was almost a Man” the main character, Dave, is unsecure and looks for respect because he doesn’t get respect from the other people. They are also different by how the story is written, “The Swimmer is written in a very odd way, while “The Man who was almost a Man” was written mostly by dialogue, and the word are the way that the black people talk. This is because the author has various techniques to help the reader connect with the colored main character, Dave. At first, the author doesn’t put quotation marks in the introduction of the short story when Dave is speaking because he wants to give the reader a sense of comfort and helps to relate with the main character. Another reason why this short story is considered successful is because it provides a life lesson that can be learned, and the story is very realistic. Dave wants to be a man having possession over a gun, but because of his immaturity and lack of education he is not aware of the consequences that owning a gun might bring. He is only a seventeen-year-old colored boy who wants to have control and the same rights as older men, and believes that he will be able to obtain this equality by owning a gun. This gives the reader insight of how important power and equality is for a young man, and how younger boys can be imprudent and lack maturity when taking decisions.

On the other hand, the most unsuccessful story we read was “The Swimmer”. The reason why it was the most unsuccessful story was because it was very unrealistic, confusing, and pretty hard to understand. The author uses a different and odd technique when writing the story, and gives the reader a hard time to keep up with the events that are occurring at a certain laps of time in the story. The story is very complicated in the way that the reader is not able to keep track of how the character changes, how lost he gets progressively and how he loses everything because of his selfishness. This story also ends in the climax, when the main character Neddy Merrill reaches his destination, home, and doesn’t find anybody there because he is facing the truth which is that he nobody has anybody else in his life. There is no resolution, and leaves the reader with a lot of doubts and unclearness.

Both of these stories differ in a great variety of ways, and are similar in some ways. The way that these stories are similar are in the way that the reader is able to know the characters pretty well because they are established in the introductions of the story, and this helps the reader keep track of who of the secondary characters the main character is dealing with. On the other hand, both of these stories differ in the way of writing. “A Man Who Was Almost a Man” is very direct, and has a clear and compact structure with an introduction, plot, climax, and a resolution. On the other hand, “The Swimmer” has an introduction, a plot, and ends at a climax, leaving the reader with many doubts and interpretations to make. “A Man Who Was Almost a Man” was also very entertaining because it provides a lesson, and “The Swimmer” doesn’t really teach a lesson, but a weird story of a man who loses himself in a period of time.
Great,

I remember that one time there was an article in the news, in which a teenager thought that his illegally purchased gun was not charged and accidentally shot another adolescent. Also, I believe that the school should teach us to stay away from drugs and weapons because we, as teenagers, need to know what having a weapon can lead you to. Thirdly, I like this short story because it had a lot of suspense, and suspenseful stories are the type of stories I like because they make me keep on reading without me wanting to.

The story I disliked the most was “The swimmer”. I disliked this story a lot because it was unrealistic. A normal person wouldn’t swim a large distance for nothing. This story didn’t motivate me to keep on reading; it didn’t have a lot of suspense. I also disliked this story because of the way the story is written. The story is written in a way that makes the reader not comprehend well what is happening in the story. Finally, I didn’t like the story because the story didn’t had a major climax or a major conflict that makes the reader start thinking of what will happen next or start to ask questions about the book.

Both of the stories defer in many ways; the story, “The Man That Was Almost a Man had a lot of suspense compared to the story,” The Swimmer” which didn’t have suspense. Also, short story “ The Man That Was Almost A Man”, was very realistic compared to the short story,” The Swimmer”, which wasn’t. A teenage person shooting another person by accident might be more common than a person swimming a huge distance for no reason. Also, the short story, “The Man That Was Almost a Man”, had a more intense conflict or climax than the short story, “ The Swimmer”. Finally, I conclude that one story was very boring, “The swimmer”, and one was very exciting, “ The Man That Was Almost A Man”.
Daniel,

I would like you to go back and tell us more about the story, "The Man Who was Almost a Man". What about the story itself did you appreciate- don't forget quotes and references will help you. I'd rather know about that than about something that you read in the news or some opinion you hold regarding school.

Also, with "The Swimmer": when you claim that it is written in a way that is difficult to understand could you give us an example or two of this challenging style?

What does this mean? "Both of the stories defer in many ways..." I am a bit confused with it.

Lastly, I would like you to go back and re-write this response in the present-tense, not the past-tense.

Thanks,

I think that the most successful story was "A Good Man Is Hard To Find".I liked this story because of the suspense it has. The story is well built and is interesting, it just made me want to keep reading, and that's what i like in a story. The story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" was about this killer that had escaped from jail and runs into this family that just had an accident. I liked this story also because of what it taught me.The fact that the grandma is so selfish and only cares about her being alive. The conversation that the grandma has with the Misfit it’s really interesting to see the way he opens up to her, but when she over does it she has to suffer the consequences, which was getting killed.I like it because throughout the whole story.I like it because what happens to this family is something that could happen to any of us. Even though it is a violent story I also liked that it had a lot to do with faith and chance.

The most unsuccessful story that we read was “ The Swimmer”.This story taught me absolutely nothing. It was boring and in my point of view had no point. I’m the type of person that likes to read stories that teach me something, or stories that keep me entertain and put me to think. And a story about a guy that’s swimming because he’s crazy doesn’t really teach me anything. We don’t see the real problem of the story till the end when he get’s home and he finds himself alone. And then we realize how in denial he is, which makes it confusing to understand throughout the whole story.
