Ann Beatie in the story “Tuesday Night” makes many inferences. She lives with her friend Dan, she also had a husband named Henry, but they divorced. She also has a daughter with Henry named Joanna. One of the inferences you get is that she cares about how she looks. You can see that in page 342, when she says that she will go on a diet and she skipped dinner. In the story you can infer that she is very jealous at Henry because Joanna treats him better than her. She also feels lonely in the story, we can infer that because of her jealousy towards Henry with Joanna, and when she got depressed and she drank a Drambuie. This shows that she tries to forget her problems for at least a while. Another thing we can infer is that she still has problems with Henry because she gets mad every time he does something “The poor child is, of course, crazy about Henry, He allows her to call him that, instead of Daddy." Here you can see the jealousy she has with because of their good relationship. You can tell that they have a good relationship in the part when she “Since he considers her too old to be read a fairy tale before bed, Henry waltzes with her” from that we infer that he knows that she won’t like to hear a bedtime story, so instead of reading one to her he does something that is more age-appropriate for her. He does that so that their relationship can be stronger and stronger. Another inference that you can find in the text is that Dan didn’t know that she and Henry fought a lot when he said “I don’t think you ever think you wanted to divorce Henry” and he also said “you two seem to get along fine” and she told him “But we fought. In this story we have to judge many inferences. At the begining of this story, it talks about Henry and her daughter Joana, but middle of the frist paragraph we see "Heny has been a good father"(page 340)and i guessed that now the narattor and Henry are not together anymore. But they still meet, and bring their child up who is Joana. The narrator knows 3 men who are very friendly with one another. They are Henry, Dan, and Bobby. Now Dan is her boyfriend, and bobby is her brother. They had dinner at an Italian restaurant in last year. And they shared some jokes. And the narrator starts to say about her diet, and said "When i was at the laundry to pick up the clothes yesterday, a woman mistook me, from the back, for her cousin Addie."(page 341) I judged this passage as the narrator has lost her weight, so the laundry woman mistook her. She has a best friend, and her name is Dianne. Dianne has married but she keep thinking of having an affair with Bobby who is the narrator's brother. So maybe she loves him. Suddenly Dan and Henry starts to fight. "If there has to be so much tijme alone, I can't see th point of living toghether. (page346) Henry said, i had a question there when i was reading that sentence it was "Why henry cares about their relationship?" And i thought maybe he is jealous. The story ends in fall. And suddenly everything stops with ends, so maybe the narrator's relationship has broken. This story was full of Inferences, and i had to guess alot. First time it was confuesed, but now it's not. And i thiknk when we read like this story, the story changes a lot the way of we guessing.
Thanks Brian,

In the story by Ann Beatie called “Tuesday Night” one can make various infereces. One of the infrecences one can make out of this story is that the narrator is not very open. We can infer this because when people ask her what she does on Tuesday nights she goes into a defensive tone. For example on page 345 when bob calls her, she says

“ you could call and tell me what you do on Tuesdays nights” “Nothing very intersting” I say ”.

This happens again right after his phone call when Joanna asks tha narrator what she does on Tuesday nights

Joanna asks suspiciosly what do I do in Tuesday nights. “Whay dos your father say I do?” I ask

This offers the reader to make an inference about how open the narrator is to people. Another inferece one can make is that the narrator cares about her physcal figure. One can know this because she says on page 342 “… and looked in the hall mirror and decided to go on a diet, so I skipped dinner”. This shows us that she wants to look better. Another inferece one can make of this story is that henry and the narrator did not like to fight in front of joanna and dan. One can infer this because when dan askes the narrator why did she divorce henry she responds on page346;

“You two seem to get along fine but we fouhgt. We didn’t get along.”

This shows the reader that Dan thought that henry and the narrator did not fight. However the narrator assures that herny and the she fought a lot. So in ths story many of facts are given to the reader but most of them have to be infered.
Thanks Joseph,

The reader can make several inferences about the character by what the narrator says. An inference is a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. The reader can infer that the mother is overwhelmed with her life, as she desperately asks to have Tuesday night's to herself. She is using her Tuesday nights as an escape from her usual life, to have some time for herself. This could even be a night where she can escape her reality. This also leads us to infer that she has many problems. There are some other clues that lead us to infer this. She gets depressed by any little thing “ I overcooked the pie crust and burned. I got depressed and drank a Drambuie,” (345). You could say it is silly to get depressed about burning a pie crust, but if you think about it, she probably has many problems piled up, so any little thing sets her off. It was not the pie crust burning that made her depressed, it was that little thing, added to all her other problems, which depresses her. By the way the mother talks about Henry, her ex husband, we can infer that she is not completely at peace with him. She probably has a grudge against him, as any little thing that he does bothers her. “The poor child is, of course, crazy about Henry, He allows her to call him that, instead of Daddy." The mother does not particularly show jealousy towards the fact that Joane and her father have a good relationship. On the contrary, what bothers her is Henry's behavior. When a person is completely at peace with another, he usually do not look for flaws in the other person. By her complaints about Henry, the reader can infer that the mother has something against him. The only life, however, that you can judge and completely understand is your own. Some inferences I can make about this story is that the narrator has a good lifestyle. “ And now he takes her to dinner at a French restaurant that she adores” (page 340). Henry clearly spoils her a lot, and lets her do anything in order for her to be happy. “ The poor child is of course, crazy about Henry. He allows her to call him that instead of Daddy (Page 340). This passage makes me infer they have a good life style, because it is more expensive to go to a French restaurant rather than to eat at home. Also, it’s not like they don’t have food at home, they are going because she likes eating in the French restaurant. This passage also makes me infer Henry Joanna so much; he wants to make her happy. Henry clearly loves Joanna and spoils her a lot. Henry also expresses her love and care to Joana in this passage: “ Since he considers her too old to be read a fairy tale before bed, Henry waltzes with her” (Page 342). This shows how he doesn’t just let Joanna go to sleep, but that he still wants to spend time with her so he accommodates with Joanna’s age and interests. In this story we can also infer that. In this story I can also infer that his wife was clearly not over Henry. “What does your father say I do?”. This passage demonstrates she still wanders about Henry, and what I infer is that she is still not over him. The narrator is a woman that has gone through a divorce with a man named Henry, they both had a girl called Joanna, and she is currently living with her partner Dan. First of all, we can infer that the narrator struggles with her weight. “I have been subsisting on red zinger tea and watermelon trying to lose weight,” (Pg. 341) and “Then I took off all my clothes and looked in the hall mirror and decided to go on a diet, so I skipped dinner,” (Pg. 342) We can infer that she is trying out different eating methods in order to lose weight. The things she does on her Tuesday nights we can see that she isn’t a crazy lady, or out of control, that she really just wants to have time to herself, and she’s not looking on doing something wrong. We can see that she is always trying to have a good relationship with her family, considering that the ex husband comes to the house and chills with them and they get along.
Inference is a good guess based on logic, observations or by interpolating the next logical step in an intuited pattern. The narrator who lives with her friend Dan, has recently been divorced from her husband who’s name is Henry. For an unmentioned reason, every Tuesday night, Henry takes their daughter out to dinner at a French restaurant. The narrator’s friend Dan works late every Tuesday evening, during which the narrator always decides to be alone. The tedious and boring things the narrator does portray and infer that she is trying to keep herself busy. Her trivial thoughts degrade the quality of the story by making the short story feel endless and dull. Her undeceive attitude coupled with her desire to be alone, surmise a possible depression. Possibly, this depression is a result of her divorce or most likely due to the day of the week. Since the author has been less than obvious to point out that Tuesday night is a key theme, we can logically presume that this is the case. Perhaps the author still loves her husband and is jealous of her daughter’s time spent with him. Conceivably, Tuesday night was the evening in which the narrator and he now ex husband went to dinner. Most likely to the same restaurant he still takes Joanna. While the narrator states that Henry is a good father, she also mentioned that while her “fathers support payments fluctuate wildly, the French dinning remains constant”. Besides her mention to the dinning and ex husband, he friend Dan also believes that “I don’t think you ever wanted to divorce Henry”. Clearly, these quotes along with her curiosity of whether or not her ex husband is curious of what she does on Tuesday nights, points us in this direction.
Thanks Paulina,

1) Where is the mistake here? "...from her husband who’s name is Henry."

2) I'm not sure what this sentence means... it is rather unclear: "Her undeceive attitude coupled with her desire to be alone, surmise a possible depression."

3) Also, here I am confused... "...this depression is a result of her divorce or most likely due to the day of the week." Do you mean that she gets depressed because it is Tuesday? Or because of the divorce? Either is fine but I would like you to defend this with support.

4)"Since the author has been less than obvious to point out that Tuesday night is a key theme,..." Less? Do you mean more? Also, is theme really the word you want here?

5)"While the narrator states that Henry is a good father, she also mentioned that..." Please stay in the same tense, the present tense when writing of literature.

6) "Besides her mention to the dinning and ex husband, he friend Dan also believes that..." Four mistakes here.

Also, in general I think that your

well-thought arguments here need support, support from the text... provide us with examples or quotations. For instance, when you say that she has 'trivial thoughts' give us some reference. Or when you say, "Perhaps the author still loves her husband and is jealous of her daughter’s time spent with him," fine, perhaps so, but please tell us why you think this. Where in the story do you find evidence to support this?

2)“This sentence means that the narrator is indecisive. This, coupled with her desire to be alone, suggests to the readers that the character is possibly depressed.

3)I am suggesting that she gets depressed because of the day of the week. Because, the story is called “Tuesday nights”. The title of this story may or may not be suggestive depending on how you interpreted it. In this case, I have interpreted it as such.

I am suggesting both. I am suggesting that her loneliness on Tuesday nights may have something to do with her divorce. Unfortunately we do not know why the character is depressed; this is the reason why both possibilities are mentioned. They are both inferences brought on by such quotes as her “fathers support payments fluctuate wildly, the French dinning remains constant”. This quote is suggestive due to the continuous nature of the French dining, and its constant occurrence on Tuesday. Also, her friend Dan said that “I don’t think you ever wanted to divorce Henry”. This quote may suggest the narrator did not want to divorce her husband and implies that the narrator may be regretful.

4)I mean less because the The narrator is more than obvious to point out that Tuesday night a key theme, and by using the word “less” I was trying to achieve a sarcastic tone. Since sarcasm can mean the opposite of what they seem to say.

Theme is the word I wish to use here since a theme can be thought of “a broad idea, moral, or message, of an essay, paragraph, movie, or a book.” In this case Tuesday Night is the broad idea of this story. Tuesday night in an idea planted in our head by the narrator. The narrator never explains the relevance of this day of the week as it applies to her loneliness, but suggests its great importance.

5)“The narrator stated that Henry is a good father, but previously, before stating this, she also mentioned that....”

6)“Besides her mention of the dining and ex-husband, her friend Dan also believes that..."

When I mention she has trivial thoughts I mean quotations such as “Henry and Dan talk about nutrition—Dan’s current interest.” The reference to this thought adds nothing to the context of the story.

The evidence in the passage that supports why I believe the narrator may love her husband is due to her curiosity of whether or not her ex-husband asks about what she does during her lonely Tuesday Nights.

“Does he seem curious?”

“It’s hard to tell with him,” she says.

Having got my answer, I’ve forgotten about her question.

The reasoning involved in drawing a conclusion or making a logical judgment on the basis of circumstantial evidence and prior conclusions rather than on the basis of direct observation. Tuesday Night is regarding a lady who settles on taking off Tuesday nights for herself, “Well, I like some time to just do what I want to do too, Joanna.” She is mother of a girl named Joanna and recently divorced. Firm and controlling describe this lady. “The minute she comes through the door was something I had said once, and he mocked me with it in defending her. Let the poor child have a minute before she goes to bed.” In her daughters class they are discussing problem with the environment, and Joanna decides she wishes to take a big avocado plant in school. Her mom does not entirely comprehend how that has to do with environmental problems. She makes a big fuss about it, but her boyfriend Dan, ends up convincing her otherwise to just let the girl take the plant. Here she shows how controlling she is as well.

“The poor child is, of course, crazy about Henry, He allows her to call him that, instead of Daddy… I am a beast if I refuse to let her eat her escargots.” Jealousy, is something that can also be inferred, her daughter does not treat her the same way she treats Henry, and that causes her to be envious. All her actions lead to inferring she is lonely and in need of attention. “Dan has to work late at his office on Tuesday nights, and a while ago I decided that I wanted that one night to myself each week.” By taking Tuesday night’s people would wonder what she is up too. “What does your father say I do?” “I never have interesting news” she says to Bobby. Low self esteem is something that takes over her as well, “Then I took off all my clothes and looked in the hall mirror and decide to go on a diet, so I skipped dinner.” Space is something she seeks, by taking time alone to do her pleasures. This lady show to be feeling lonely “I got depressed and drank a Drambuie”

Along the story she seeks attention for the people around her, because of the loneliness she feels. By taking time off, she might feel better about her appearances and take care of herself for once, instead of being worried about everything around her. But that wasn’t the case she was in search of time to get away from her daily routines, but ended up becoming more lonely and miserable.
Bianca,

1) How can we make this sentence cleaner? "Tuesday Night is regarding a lady who settles on taking off Tuesday nights for herself..."

2) Also, how do we punctuate short story titles?

3) Two mistakes here... "In her daughters class they are discussing problem with the environment..."

4) What's wrong with this? "By taking Tuesday night’s..."

5) And this... "This lady show to be feeling lonely..."

Otherwise, Bianca, you have done a decent job here... I think that you made some decent inferences and supported them pretty well.

Thanks,
