He saw it as a way of gaining respect, and of him getting a "loan".Once he convinces his mom of buying the gun, the rule that his mom gave him was to bring it back home directly after he buys it.But Dave doesn't even pay attention to this, and goes to the plantation when he has the gun at his power. He thinks by going there he can shoot ones and nobody will hear it.He then shoots/kills Mr.Hawkins mule, Jenny by "Accident". Dave's mom can notice that he is not the same when he gets home, which caused him to burst out the truth about what had really happened, but people's reaction is totally different of what he expected.Everybody started laughing at him. What he wanted since the beginning was to make people see that he had grown up,become more mature, and powerful, but it was the total opposite.Everybody in the town still looked at him as a immature and powerless, just like before. When everybody is laughing at him he takes his gun with him and leaves the town.I don't think Dave is fully responsible of killing the mule. He seems so desperate for power because of the way he feels about what people think of him, he has always been obligated to work, and it's like his trapped and has no way out or no choice to choose what he wants or follow his dreams. He is naive or innocent by not knowing what a gun can cause, and how a gun isn't going to make his problems better, just worst.I don't think David knows the true responsibilities that come with becoming an adult. His child hasn't been the best and he doesn't feel quite focused, if you stop and see he has no clue on what he really wants, he's immature and that isn't under his control, lack of education helps him not know the consequences that come with buying a gun. But it isn't all his fault. In a way the killing of the mule is like a new opening for him to realize what he did, and for him to realize that he has to change, and now he has a chance to slowly change.
Dave Glover".
He wants to become a real man. So in the story he tries to buy a gun."Waal, Ahma buy a gun", so he asks to mister Joe, and Mr.Joe says. "Say if you wanna buy a gun, why don't you buy one from me? I gotta gun to sell."(1113) But his mother doesn't let him to have a gun "Who yuh git it from?", so Dave says "Frome Joe, down at the sto". and she takes his Catolog, and screams "Quit hollerin at me! Whut's wrong wid yuh? Yuh crazy?"(pg 1114) His mom doesn't understand Dave's fear, that he wants to be a real man. I think Dave has to be more mature, because he thinks that by having a gun, he can be real man. But I don't think so, because a gun is nothing for me. But for him, it's a symbol of being mature. Finally he begins to play with a gun. And he meets a accident. "Ah brung ol Jenny down here sos Ah could do mah plowin. Ah plowed bout two rows, just like yuh see.".. When he bought the gun his purpose was to feel manly. He didn’t buy it with the intention of killing, harming, or even injuring anyone. He wanted the gun to feel more power, to feel respected, and to feel manly. The narrator demonstrates this when he says: “In the gray light of dawn he held it loosely, feeling a sense of power. Could kill a man with a gun like this. Kill anybody, black or white. And if he were holding his gun in his hand, nobody could run over him; they would have to respect him,” (Pg.1116). Dave feels really bad for his actions when Jenny dies. He was even crying:" Dave looked at Jenny's stiff legs and began to cry" (Pg.1119). He is tired of his African American background that gives him to no opportunities in life. He feels trapped in a world that strips him of his personal and economic power. Dave sees his life as a series of abuses and humiliations. He lacks the education and opportunities to make his life better because of the social background. " Ahma beg her t gimme some money. Ahm lo enough to have gun. Ahm seventeen. Almost a man." (Pg.1113) Dave believes that acquiring a gun will end his adolescence and transform him into a real man. He sees the gun as the solution to all his problems and compensation for all his weaknesses. We can see this in (Pg.1116) “In the gray light of dawn he held it loosely, feeling a sense of power. Could kill a man with a gun like this. Kill anybody, black or white. Holding his gun in his hand, nobody could run over him; they would have to respect him.” Ultimately Dave only wants the respect and independence he believes he deserves. Dave looked at Jenny's stiff legs and began to cry" (Pg.1119) It is clear that Dave is still a child even though he desperately seeks the journey to manhood. He’s not yet ready. Dave's lying only gets him into more trouble, and his behavior only proves to us that he is unprepared for the responsibilities that growing up bring. "All the crowd was laughing now" (Pg.1119) Dave is tired of being teased and ridiculed. In the end Dave's situation in the social environment was what made him take those actions. He didn't kill anyone and did not mean to kill Jenny. We must remember he is still a child, and like one he fails to realize that his actions, including his lying, will only bring him more problems in the future. His lack of education makes him blind. If he could have only seen beyond, he would have known that a gun could not buy him independence, power, respect and much less manhood. Knowing all this he would have never taken the actions he did.
Well done,

You write: "Dave says to mr. joe on page 1114 “shucks. Mistah Joe, Ahm gittint be a man like anybody else” this prooves that he has no intencion what-so-ever to kill a living organism." Why? How does that prove anything? I would like you to explain this more thoroughly. There are also three spelling mistakes in that sentence.

Then you state that "dave walked about 20 feet, held the gun far out from him at arm`s length, and turned his head. Hell he told himself, Ah ain afroaid.” Once again there is proof that he only wanted to become a man. This statement also proooves that dave had no intencion to kill the mule, jenny." Really? Why? I'm not sure that I see any connection here. I think that you need to support and explain your arguments more clearly.

Also, Joseph, I don't really see that you have proofread this too well... consider the following... "This statement also proooves that dave had no intencion to kill the mule, jenny. Another state ment that porves that he had no intecion to kill". There are so many errors here that it shows me you have not really read this over.

Basically, I want you to re-write this.

Thanks,

What he says is true because Dave didn’t wanted to shoot the mule because we can see when the narrater says” he knew he had to stop that blood or Jenny would bleed to death”, page(117) and also when the narrator says “ He chased the mule for a half a mile, trying to catch her”, page(117) Normally the chances of shooting a mule and trying to save it so it doesn't doesn’t die are very rare, but in this case Dave does the impossible for saving the mule. Normally guns are used for protection and not a demonstration for power. People who think that they have a gun to show power are normally the people who turn out getting in trouble or teen agers. This example fits in with teen agers because teen agers tend to think that they know everything and that almost no one is as smart as they are.
Some issues:

1)What is wrong with this sentence? "What he says is true because Dave didn’t wanted to shoot the mule..."

2) And this... "...one should be to older than Dave."

Other than these small problems this is rather good... You have made a decent case for defending Dave.
