There is a Mythic hero in the story "The Swimmer", and his name is Neddy Merrili. In the story he seems like, he likes to drink, likes to have party. One day he was having party, and he realized that he can "swim home" through public pools. He seems like hero too, when he swims around each house. "The only maps and charts he had to go by were remembered or imaginary but htese were clear enough. First there were the Grahams, the Hammers, the Lears, the Howlnands, and the Crosscups...(page 1234). But his neighbors don't like him that much when he swims people say get out "Hey, you, you without the identification disk, get outa the water."(page 1237) And he did. Later he came back to home his house was empty. Because he sawm for too long time. "He had swum too long, he had been immersered too long, and his nose and his throat were sore from the water."(page1240). He tried to get into house, he finally entered, but it was empy, and dark "He tried the garage doors to see what cars were in but the doors were locked and rust came off the handles onto his hands...looking in at the windows, saw that the place was empty."(page1241). I found some similarities between "The Odyssey" and this story. They both do journey, and meet people, have fun, and they come back. The odysseus, and Nedy both mythic heroes, they both think they both famouse, they both show their strength during their journey. But the ending is different, Odysseus comes back and have happy ending, but not Nedy. Nedy should take care of his family, or himself, rather than being hero , and famouse.
Thanks,

Both books talk about a voyage, in which their main goal is getting back home. Odysseus has an affair with Calypso while being with Penelope. So does Neddy, he has an affair with Shirley while being with Lucinda. They both have obstacles to go through. Odysseus gets distracted by the creatures and the big monsters and so, he also gets out of his path by gods that have more power than he does. Neddy, is also distracted and gets out of his main path by his surroundings. His neighbors, and other people against his believes question him and look down at him when we jumps in his neighbor’s pools to get back home. Also, Odysseus didn’t have a straight trip back home; he had to stop in different places. He would stop in different islands, to feed his crew, and get all the necessary to keep on to his voyage home. Neddy doesn’t have a straight trip back home, he would swim from a pool to another, because there was no straight pool that would go from where he was to his house. They both had to stop several times in order to keep with their long voyages. They had small trips in between, but all the small trips together would equal the same as a big voyage. They both were really smart and knew where they were going. Odysseus had a great crew, and he was a brilliant man, whom many admired, the book makes him look as if he were the best. Neddy in the other hand was a cartographer and he had a great idea of what his route back home was. They were both really orientated. They were both welcomed in every place they stopped. Odysseus had hospitality everywhere he stopped at. So did Neddy, because his neighbors would give him hospitality. They were both really determined to get back home. Odysseus would fight EVERYTHING in order to reach his destination. Neddy is also very determined he says: “He climbed up the ladder and wondered if he had the strength to get home”. They came to be known for facing danger, displaying courage and the will for self sacrification. Heroes would do all this for some greater good of all humanity. Neddy Merril is a very confident and fearless character. At the beginning of the story his actions seem like something heroic and legendary. The author tries to reinforce this by saying; “He had made a discovery, a contribution to modern geography; he would name the stream Lucinda after his wife. He was not a practical joker nor was he a fool but he was determinedly original and had a vague and modest idea of himself as a legendary figure." (Pg.1234) Neddy has achieved all the extras of success and is surrounded by friends and family. He takes comfort in being a well respected member of society. When Neddy gets the idea to swim home through the pools, he sees himself as a brave explorer, setting off for the unknown from a home that is stable and secure. He sees himself as an "original" and a "legendary figure" that is making an important discovery. We the readers might see him as a hero for contributing to modern geography and carrying the rich life he had. Even though the author early on tries to convince us of the character’s heroism, as we read on we come to realize he actually has very few qualities of a true hero. As Neddy makes his journey across the country, we see that interior emptiness and hopelessness are his only companions. Although Neddy seems to have a perfect and happy life, he nevertheless remains isolated from others. He can’t remember facts about his friend’s lives and neither his. "This breach in his chain of water disappointed him absurdly, and he felt like some explorer who seeks a torrential headwater and finds a dead stream" (Pg.1236) His fantasies about exploring eventually disappear as his journey becomes harder and stranger. Neddy does not look like a great explorer and hero any more- he loses his way and finds himself forced to face the consequences of his actions and the harsh reality of aging for the first time in his life. "It was probably the first time in his adult life that he had ever cried" (Pg 1240) He is no longer confident and fearless. Instead he becomes more and more miserable and bewildered.

At the end of the story, Neddy is no longer original or legendary. He is simply cold, alone, and confused. At the beginning Neddy can remind us of Odysseus because he is described as a hero full of strength, courage and confidence. Later on in the story we notice that they do not share heroism in common at all. The only similarity that remains between them is the long trip they both took and the time they spent away their loved ones. Their journeys became lifelong endeavors.
Thanks Paulina,

Neddy is a hero, but he is a hero for himself. He creates his own voyage, with a goal which is to swim across the county and return home. Ned shows heroic characteristics like perseverance bravery, and strength. Ned reaches a point where he can either continue his journey, or take the easy way home, by just crossing the road. Although he is extremely fatigued, he decides to complete his journey, and take the hard way around. Ned shows us his bravery when he arrives at the public pool. It stank like chlorine, and was probably not very clean. Although he was a little bit frightened, it was a part of his journey, so he swam through it. He was "determined to complete his journey even if it meant putting his life in danger," (1237). Ned has much physical strength as well as psychological strength. It takes much physical strength to complete his voyage, but most importantly, psychological strength. At one point, Ned feels exhausted and cold, as if he would never feel warmth again; despite these feelings, he has the psychological strength to keep going. It is said that we need to be satisfied with ourselves, before we seek to satisfy others. Neddy is a hero for himself, which is what matters the most. Neddy "had a vague and modest idea of himself as a legendary figure," (1234). Neddy may not seem heroic to others, nor could his journey seem like an epic voyage, but it is to him. This makes Ned a hero, for himself. If there is any one mythical hero Neddy is like, it is Odysseus. Although Odysseus' journey is much more hard core, Neddy's journey is something like that. They are on a journey home, they pass many different places, meet different people, encounter difficulties, but finally return home. They both return to find things very different. Odysseus finds his house and wife are surrounded by suitors, while Ned finds his house is empty. Both men were unloyal; Odysseus on Calypso's island, and Ned with a woman from his county. They both go through great danger, Odysseus several times almost killed; while Ned went through the danger of jumping in a public pool. Both men lost track of time on their way home. Odysseus is idolized by plenty, yet Ned idolizes himself, both men are true heros.
Thanks,

(wiki answers). To resemble a mythical hero he has to fit in these three sub-categories. Neddy is considered to be a courageous. he realizes that he can swim home. To swim the entire county is not easy, one has to be secure with one self and one has to have courage. For example on page 1240 “he had swam too long, he had been immersed too long his nose and his throat were sore… but went down the steps into the icy water and swam…” this shows both a courageous personality and a strength in his heart. Not only does he have strength in his heart but also he has to have great physical strength. This is also proven when at the end after all that swimming and all that exhaustion he arrived home and started to pound his door with all his strength. “He shouted, pounded on the door, tried to force it with his shoulder …“. He is also famous for all his because he covered all those homes and saw all those people; his story was even made into a movie. However Neddy is not much of a hero to me. What he did does not exactly heroic. He actually just made a journey home but in a very original way, swimming. “It even says on page 1234 “the Making his way home by an uncommon route gave him the feeling that he was a pilgrim, an explorer” this shows that he is just a pilgrim or just an explorer. That is not a mythical hero. Neddy, out of all the characters I could think of, reminds me a lot of Ulysses. He took the long way home; in both cases they traveled by water. But on page 1234 “a man with a destiny; and he knew that he would find friends all along the way,”needy also talks about destiny, as if it were his destiny to go that way, such as Ulysses.
Thanks,

One thing that could make Neddy have the appearance of a mythic hero is in the fact that he uses all the strength he has to accomplish his goal. Even toward the end of the story it talks about how tired he is because he used up all of his strength because he was so determined. Another thing that could identify him as a mythic hero is his courage. Even when he was so tired that he could hardly pull himself out of the pool he had the courage to keep going and the determination to make it all the way to his house. “He had done what he wanted, he had swum the country, but he was so stupefied with exhaustion that his triumph seemed vague.” He was so tired from all of his hard work and efforts that he couldn’t even enjoy his victory of accomplishing his goal. In the story “The Swimmer” Neddy lives in the suburbs of Westchester County. One day he was in a party and he noticed that by making a different route only by swimming in public and private pools, he can go home. He felt like he was an explorer. He also thought about all the people he could meet on his way home. He swam through many pools on his way home but when he got to the Hallorans’ pool they told him that they were sorry for his misfortunes, which were that he sold his house and something had happened to his family but he denied it and kept going. After he left the Hallorans’ house, he went to many pools and eventually ended in a bar where he was treated badly and there he noticed that his social standing decreased. He didn’t know what was going on which tells us that he was very lost and confused. I think that he is not a mythical hero because of this adventure, but he does have a similarity with a mythical hero, it is Odysseus from the Odyssey. They are alike because they both had an adventure without their family therefore, they couldn’t know what was going on while they were gone. Another similarity they have is that they are both brave and audacious because he kept going no matter who or what came in the way, just like Odysseus. In a way, Neddy is a mythical character because he had the courage to walk to every pool he found on his way home and jump in it, swim across it, and keep going until he finds another pool, which can be many because he could have lived far away from the Westerhazy’s house. But, Neddy didn’t do anything out of this world, all he really did was swim home and any person who can swim can do that, the only thing is that it’s very boring and tiring. Neddy can be seen as both a mythical hero, and he cannot be seen as one, all you got to do is think what is a mythical hero to you and read the story to answer that question.
Thanks,

I believe that Neddy Merill resembles a mythic hero in the way that he is very courageous, he is an adventurer, and is very secure of himself and his actions. An example that demonstrates that he is considered a legendary figure or a hero is in this phrase: “He had made a discovery, a contribution to modern geography; he would name the stream Lucinda after his wife. He was not a practical joker nor was he a fool but he was determinedly original and had a vague and modest idea of himself as a legendary figure,” (Pg. 1234) This quote reflects that Neddy considers himself to be a “legendary figure” and also believes that he is a hero in the way that he contributed to modern geography by putting a new name to the county’s stream. I also believe that Neddy may be considered a hero because he is a very audacious adventurer. “Making his way home by an uncommon route gave him the feeling that he was a pilgrim, an explorer, a man with a destiny; and he knew that he would find friends all along the way,” (Pg. 1234) This quote demonstrates that Neddy is a hero in the way that he is an explorer who is anxious to find a new route to his home, and is also confident that he will find friends along the way. It is definitely an enthusiastic adventurer that is looking forward to. Even though he reflects many mythical hero characteristics he also lacks some characteristics. “He found himself unprepared. He was laughed at, jeered at, a beer can was thrown at him, and he had no dignity or humor to bring to the situation,” (Pg.1237) This quote demonstrates that Neddy may not resemble a perfect hero because he had no dignity or humor to bring to the embarrassing situation that he was in. He was not prepared to defend himself or demand respect like a real hero. Neddy reminds me of Odysseus because he is very adventurous, audacious and bold. He also abandons his family like Odysseus, and takes the time that he needs in order to complete his adventure and doesn’t give up even though many obstacles are present.
Thanks Melanie,

A couple of things about the following quoate... "“He had made a discovery, a contribution to modern geography; he would name the stream Lucinda after his wife. He was not a practical joker nor was he a fool but he was determinedly original and had a vague and modest idea of himself as a legendary figure,” (Pg. 1234) This quote reflects that Neddy considers himself to be a “legendary figure” and also believes that he is a hero in the way that he contributed to modern geography by putting a new name to the county’s stream." Alright, but just because someone considers himself a 'legendary figure' does that mean they actually are one? And also, the Lucinda stream... is this actually a real stream?

Also, if Odysseus is considered a mythical hero, well, didn't he also get laughed at and jeered at along the way? How is his reaction different than Ned's?

Thanks,

An example that demonstrates that he is a strong man is the following quote: “He hoisted himself up on the far cur-he never used the ladder-and started across the lawn. When Lucinda asked where he was going he said he was going to swim home,” (Pg. 1234) I believe that this demonstrates his strength because he can do things on his own without using objects like ladders, he is self-confident and independent, and he is also very brave and resistant in order to “swim home”. Swimming home requires a lot of physical resistance because he plans in swimming through the “Lucinda River” which is the chain of pools in the county. There are several pools that he has to swim and he never gives up until he arrives at his destination, home. He differs from Odysseus in the way that he was unprepared to confront uncomfortable situations, unlike Odysseus who was always prepared for these situations such as the suitors at home. Even though the suitors laughed at Odysseus, he didn’t pay attention to them and he demanded respect when he revealed himself as Odysseus, not as a beggar, and defeated all of them with the arrow test in order to marry Penelope.
