First of all, we have to know the definitions of the words "Chance", and "Fate". Fate is a power that some people believe controls and decides everything that happens, in a way that cannot be prevented or changed. Chance is posibility, luck, an unknown element that seems to have no assignable cause.

At the end of the story grandma dies, the question is "Was her death the result of fate, or result of chance?". I think it was the result of fate, because she had read about the Misfits in the newspaper "she stood with one hand on her thin hip and the other rattliong the newspaper at his bald head.'Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people..."(page 1). So she had information about The Misfit, and the family was looking for the house, but it was not there and they met 3 men, and there was the Mistfit. And the grandmother recognized that he was the Misfit, "The grandmother had the peculiar feeling that the bespectacled man was someone she knew. His face was as familiar to her as if she had known him all her life but she could not recall who he was....The grandmother shrieked. She scrambled to her feet and stood staring. "You're The Misfit!" she said. "I recognized you at once!"(page 2). So the Misfit told to the grandma and said "Yes'm,.. but it would have been better for all of you, lady, if you hand't of reckernized me." (page 2) What he said there is he was going to kill the family, because the grandma recognized that. But what if she hadn't read that newspaper, and didn't recognized that the Misfit? Maybe, the family and the grandma woudln't have died. It wass a fated death. Everything that happend to the family was related to the death. Grandma read the Misfit in the newspaper, and they started trip. They lost the way to go to the house, and they met the Misfit, and grandma recognized that he was the Misfit. And they got killed because she recognized.
Well-written, Brian...

Chance is a possibility of something to happen; fate is that it will happen. The story is written trying to explain life; when you are a child, an adult, and when you’re old and u die. When they are getting ready to get in the car, they are in their childhood moments getting prepared for the adulthood, which is when they are in the car. When they die is when they are in the stage of oldness and death. This is an example of fate because they drove directly towards their death. Chance appears when the cat jumps on Bailey which made him have the accident, it is chance because there was also probability that the cat jumped on someone else. When the car stops and the Misfit comes out of the car has both fate and chance because the probability that when you crash and a criminal stops right in front of you and kills you isn’t that high; but, it’s a little odd that the Misfit was the one who saw the crash and stopped. Another example of fate would be when Bailey screams “We’re in a terrible predicament! Nobody realizes what it is” because Bailey and his family are going through something bad, and something worst is going to happen which is that they are going to die, so there fate takes place because Bailey was right when he said that because fate killed them. There are many more examples in the story of fate and chance, but these are the ones that caught my attention because it is very interesting the way that fate and chance played a role in this those parts of the story.
Thanks Jose,

Differencing chance to faith, in chance you have information of a situation that may happen, it’s up to you if you want to risk the situation and take a chance, or not. With faith, it’s just your destiny you can’t control because you don’t know anything about what may or may not happen. When the family decides if they are going to travel or not, they are taking a chance. It’s a chance they are taking on whether they’ll encounter with the Misfit or not. The grandma also takes a chance when she points out the plantation. She was not sure if it really was the plantation, but she decides to take the risk or chance of pointing it out not knowing if she was going to confuse the family or not. Faith also plays an important part in the story. It wasn’t the grandma’s decision if she was going to die or not, it was her faith. Also, when the cat attacks Bailey causing the accident that was also an act of faith. Bailey couldn’t do anything about the crash. There are a lot of things in the story that would be impossible to determine. One thing that happens completely by chance is that the Misfit escaped prison just before they go on their trip. The fact that he escapes and the grandmother learns about it is not only chance, but also fate. Fate is something that unavoidably befalls a person. The grandma learning about the Misfit’s escape right before they go on the trip is chance because it was something that was impossible to determine. It is pure chance that the grandmother would notice when she did that they were in the wrong state when she did causing the accident. What happened could not have been determined or prepared for in any way. The grandma probably makes the biggest mistake of her life, causing a chain of events that eventually lead to the deaths of her and her family. “The thought was so embarrassing that she turned red in the face and her eyes dilated and her feet jumped, upsetting her valise in the corner. The instant the valise moved, the newspaper top she had over the basket under it rose with a snarl and Pitty Sing, the cat, jumped onto Bailey’s shoulder… the car turned over once and landed right-side-up in a gulch off the side of the road.” If it hadn’t been for the grandma and her little confusion with what state the house was in then they never would have gotten into the accident. One first has to state the difference between these two words. Chance is the possibility for an event to happen, while fate is a force that predetermines an event. In this story these two factors help each other out, fate uses chance to unroll this story. For example there is example of chance in page one where its says “I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that a loose in it.” It is kind of ironic how at the end how fate uses chance to put baileys family and the misfit together. Another example of chance in this story is when the grandmother tells the bailey to go through the dirt road. “The dirt road to the secret panel was hilly and there were sudden washes in it, sharp curves, and dangerous embankments,” (page 5) when this happens chance becomes in place because, by definition, there is a possibility that they can have an accident because of the poorly made road. At the end they do have an accident and because of fate they ended up were they would meet the misfit. So then once lost and stranded chance of being mugged or assaulted increases. “In a few minutes they saw a car some distance away on top of al hill, coming slowly as in the occupants were watching them” (page 5). Now the chance that this family gets mugged becomes a reality. Then at the end when bailey says “we’re in a terrible predicament! A Good Man Is Hard to Find is about a Southern family that is about to go on a road trip through the South. The Grandmother fears traveling because Misfit, a criminal, has just escaped from prison. She tries to convince her son, Bailey, to take the family to Tennessee for the vacation instead of to Florida because she read in an article that Misfit was heading for Florida. Driving south the grandmother realizes that a plantation she once visited is nearby. She wants to visit the house so she tells her companions that the house has secret panels. Chance and fate have huge roles in this short story and are reflected in many ways. First of all, the grandmother didn’t want to head to Florida because she was very conscious about the case of “The Misfit”. She was well aware that the Misfit had been released from the Federal Pen and was headed to Florida. The grandmother said: “I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that a loose in it,” (Pg. 1) She obviously didn’t want to take her grandchildren in the same direction the criminal was heading at because there was a slight chance that they could bump into each other. Second of all, “the dirt road to the secret panel was hilly and there were sudden washes in it, sharp curves, and dangerous embankments,” (Pg. 5) There is definitely a chance to get in an accident in such a dangerous road. When the grandmother recalled that the secret panel wasn’t in Florida, but in Tennessee, whole family’s fate was to end up being lost because she didn’t say anything because of the embarrassment. “In a few minutes they saw a car some distance away on top of al hill, coming slowly as in the occupants were watching them… it was a big black battered hearselike automobile. There is a big chance for the family to get robbed or offended in any way. Finally, when Bailey says: “we’re in a terrible predicament! Nobody realizes what this is,” (Pg. 7) Fate definitely plays a role in this statement because it describes what a terrible situation Bailey and his family are going through. Chance and fate have huge roles in this short story and are reflected in many ways. Chance is defined as a possibility of something happening, on the other hand, fate is defined as the development of events beyond a person’s control or in other words, your destiny. Fate is reflected in the following phrase “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady,” (Pg. 1) This is a foreshadow that the grandmother’s fate is to be an accident, and that anyone who would see her would recognize her because she is very lady-like. First of all, the grandmother didn’t want to head to Florida because she was well aware that the Misfit had been released from the Federal Pen and was headed to Florida. 5) There is definitely a chance to get in an accident in such a dangerous road that hasn’t been traveled in a long period of time. “In a few minutes they saw a car some distance away on top of al hill, coming slowly as in the occupants were watching them… it was a big black battered hearse like automobile. There were three men in it,” (Pgs. 5-6) This description definitely demonstrates the chance of the men in the car being offenders, maybe even being “The Misfit”. Many of the events in the story like the car accident, and bumping into the “Misfit” are all chances that lead up to the family’s fate… death.
Alright Melanie,

Chance and Fate take a hefty role in the story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” The words chance and fate are frequently confused because of their resemblance. Fate is what will occur, something that is predetermined, it can’t be changed. On the other hand, Chance is a 50 /50% chance of happening. “The absence of any cause of events that can be predicted, understood, or controlled.” The story is more heavily influenced by the uncertainty of chance and all that it implies rather than the concrete challenge of fate. “Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is a loose from the Federal Pen and headed towards Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people.” The story begins with the grandmother not wanting to go to Florida with her son and his family, since this criminal was loose. So they decided to take an alternative rout to another place. While on the road the grandmother recognized a plantation with a house she remembered as young. “She recalled exactly which road to turn off to get to it. She knew Bailey would not be willing to loose any time...” Once they convinced Bailey, they headed to the house on a dusty unpaved road. While driving the grandmothers cat jumped on Bailey who made him loose control of the car, and resulted in a terrible accident. Chance takes place here in many different aspects. The chance of the grandmother remembering the house, followed by the chance of Bailey giving in to go to the old house, even though he knew it was a waist of time. The possibility of the cat jumping on Bailey causing an accident. More ironically a car appeared at a distance which had 3 men in it. “The grandmother had the peculiar feeling that he bespectacled man was someone she knew… She scrambled to her feet and stood staring, you’re The Misfit.” Here chance is seen again since the grandmother was well aware of whom this criminal was, on the other hand Bailey didn’t know anything about him, until his mother made him aware of the situation. As well as the odds of Misfit not being in Florida, when the family was trying to avoid any kind of danger. Chances were seen in Misfit as well as he said; “Turn to the right, it was a wall... Turn to the left it was a wall. Look up it was a ceiling; look down it was a floor. I forget what I done, lady.” Misfit got blamed for killing his father when he recalls that his father died of the epidemic flue, and he had nothing to do with it. The chances of his son being blamed for the death of his father are present. Misfit took wrong decisions and many o f them were based on chances, which created him into the monster he is. Fate is the main idea of the story. Since the beginning of the story Misfit was a prevailing subject. “Did you read about that criminal, The Misfit, that’s escaped?” Meeting with Misfit was always destined. The accident was what lead them to the grave. “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady.” This was said at the very beginning of the story, which seemed very suspicious. That what leads me to believe it was all fate. When they crashed the grandmother suggested; “Maybe a car will come along.” Surprise Surprise, it was Misfit. It is all connected. Misfit was not in Florida, he encounters the family after they crashed, the grandmother was all dressed incase of an accident. It all leads to the death of the family. It was their destiny, it was their fate, to meet up with Misfit and die.
This is well-written, and even better, Bianca, well thought out.
On the good side you made a great argument between chance and fate when you spoke of the cat and the car accident. Nicely explained and well-detailed.

But I wish that you would do the same thing explaining, for instance, how or why the 'chance' for violence was increased because of an unpaved road.

Furthermore, there are so many misspelling and egregious grammatical errors here that I really can't ignore it...
