Some of the videos for example the second video would transmit a very passive energy. It starts out with a lovely sunset on a beach. It was also very tranquil and settles, its atmosphere would not be scary, nor would it provide fear, like the book would have intended too. In the other hand, the third video was the complete opposite. It had lots of music, and it was very intense, and there was lots of blood, but it still didn’t transmit the idea the book does. The film is rather modern, and the witches would be nurses, the scene was in a hospital. Since the book was written near 1607, it is very unrealistic to make the scene on a hospital with lots of technologies that would have not existed by then. It is also very “ unnatural”, the witches were supposed to do their spells with animals or other creations of nature. I imagined the scene in a place related to nature, such as a forest, not in a hospital with lots of unnatural, human created equipment. The fourth video I would have considered to be very cheap. The characters can barely move their bodies, and therefore it obviously wont is able to focus on the faces of the witches, nor on the expressions. The witches are also very pretty, and that is certainly not how I would have imagined them to be. It doesn’t transmit fear either; it doesn’t even have background music. The first and fifth videos are my favorite. They both have natural scenery in nature, and they both have the thunders, which the book had mentioned. The actors look like witches, and their costumes fit with the characters perfectly. The characters transmit fear as well. It is somewhat how I predicted the movie would be. My favorite is the fifth one, just because it has a better quality.
Thanks Paula,

The interpretation by Orson Welles formulates the witches to be mysterious by adding a scent of fog and a tablespoon of stereotypes. He made the witches talk with a rough voice and a cauldron between their old hands. The rough voice and the aged characteristics also appeared in video interpretation by Nicole Williamson. In amateur “lego” interpretation the cauldron appearance also happened. The modern film by PBS the witches are young and there is no cauldron. This is a very different view of the first scene of Macbeth. The beach interpretation differs in the fact that it lack the cauldron, however the elderly women is a common factor in this interpretation. the suspense is created by many factors. Music in the interpretation by Orson Welles and by the one in the Nicole Williamson. The one with the nurses creates suspense by using the heart monitor. Fog in the one by Orson Welles also creates suspense.

The one I think captures best the felling of the first scene of the first act of Macbeth is the one by Orson Welles. This is because in this scene he takes the mysteriousness and emphasized it by not showing the witches faces . this creates a feeling of “Who are these people?” and this creates a type of mystery that depicts well the felling of this scene. Another way that he creates this type of emotion is by using fog and put out of place the viewer, generating even more mystery. He uses the rough voices to make the witches seem odd. To create suspense he uses a long pause before the witches say Macbeth and the music after they say it. So the way the depicts the character and the way he creates suspense and mystery is why this is the best scene the shows the feeling of the first scene of Macbeth.
Thanks Joseph,

Some videos are really violence like Video 3. And some videos are in really calm mood like Video 2 , and like Video 1 it is in dark mood, and Video 4 i don't really get what mood it is in. Anyways the thing is that even though they are in different mood, different characteristics, and different actors they have similarities. For example for the all videos, witches are weird, freaky, scary, and have weird voice. They all do something freaky, they all love dark want to meet in the lightening... etc. Because that's how 3 witches were described in Macbeth book. I mostly liked the video 1 which is filmed by Orson Welles. Because in that video we cannot see witche's faces clearly, so it makes witches more mystery. And also it's in dark weather which witches love it, and the voices they have is really sound like witches, and scary. I love the last part when they make Macbeth's statue with mud(?), because in Macbeth book Witches are the characters who make prophesy to Macbeth and everyone. So the Macbeth statue that they made show us that they going to meet Macbeth, so maybe that statue is part of prophesy they make. And i really didn't like the violence one which was Video 3, because the nurses(witches) in that video, are so freaky, and i think the director of that film wanted to scare people, but that's not the point in the book. I think the point of the 3 witches intro is to introduce the character Macbeth, and to show the readers that Witches make prophesy.
Thanks Brian,

It is when and where will they meet again. They decide it to be after the war is over. The videos 1, 3, and 5 are ones that were similar in the way that the scene they were in was all dark and mysterious. They were all dark so we can tell that they are witches. They are better than the rest of the videos because these were the only ones that helped us know that they were witches because of the darkness they were in. although the fourth video also cleared to me that they were withes when I saw the witches fly away but it didn’t suit the scene they were in, the scene had to be dim and scary looking. The one in the beach had the scary looking part, but the scene didn’t seem to be on the beach in the story or at least no one would have imagined it. But the characters did look like witches because how they were dressed and how they appeared physically. They also buried a hand, which is something that you don’t see every day. The one that I think best represented the scene of the play was the first video because it was all dark and you couldn’t really see the witches, you could only see what they were doing. This made the scene look scary, mysterious and dark which are the things that should be how the scene should be represented. Another video that was good was the third video. This video was very good by the darkness of the hospital. The witches were also scary looking because the hospital was all black and the witches were very white so it had an intense contrast. The only thing that I didn’t like about this video was that it’s advanced, so it doesn’t match the time period in which the play was meant to be in, because nowadays people don’t talk like that, or believe in witches so it doesn’t go with what is supposed to happen in the play.
Thanks Jose,

Although they all follow the same dialogue, they are set in different settings and interpreted differently. The video by Orson Welles is similar to that of Nicol Williamson in that they are both in penumbral settings. The woebegone darkness of these scenes and the witches susurrant voices create feelings of mystery and terror. The videos of Polanski and Mapetal are similar for the opposite reasons. The witches don't seem to be surreptitious in neither of the videos. In the video by Polanski, the witches meet in an open beach, which is not in the least bit secretive, and therefore not mysterious nor scary. Mapetal uses a bright, colorful setting; these colors convey feelings of happiness, not treachery. Neither of the videos make their witches in the least bit scary. Polanski's witches, being old and having sweet voices, are portrayed as inoffensive old ladies. Mapetal's witches are dressed in bright colors, and are given bubbly voices which also portray them as anything but furtive. The modernity of the Macbeth 2010 interpretation sets it apart from all the other videos. It's the only video that has young witches and is set in doors. The witches also use modern technologies like vaccines and machines in contrast to the other videos which use antique cauldrons.

Orson Welle's video does the best job of capturing the energy and theme of Macbeth. The video evokes feelings of mystery, curiosity and terror all at the same time. The darkness and the smoke in the beginning of the video cause uncertainty, as the audience can't clearly see, nor understand exactly what is happening. Darkness is dominant in this video, and is therefore associated with malevolence. The witches' deep and evil voices saying "Macbeth" combine perfectly with the image of the statue to give the audience chills. The music alternates in the right times to spark excitement and terror at the same time. All the features of this video are combined strategically in order to create the perfect mood for the introducing scene.
You have done a good job here, Sol,

After all, Macbeth is a tragedy of ambition and betrayal and the way it is presented to the audience is the most important aspect of all. As unique human beings we have different qualities that vary from altheas’ to nerds and the way we comprehend and examine situations varies a great deal. Whoever was in charge of producing video clip number two got confused with the little mermaid. First of all, the setting is totally misplaced. A beach? Don’t we all think about summer vacations, a glossy tan, and fun with friends when we see one? Maybe even Disney World. Besides, the irritating noise from the seagulls that clutter your mind and resemble the nightmares of the little mermaid’s arrival to shore is always present. Are those old women ready to be taken to a nursing home or witches? Video clip number three is a virtual tour. You had a dream and fell into an eternal spinning hole that brought you to 2015. Macbeth is a very old play that was written when people were convinced of the existence of witches. Many believed they had superior powers and savage ideals. Today almost nobody has confidence in those old stories. People don’t go to bed praying not be attacked by witches rather by tsunamis. Witches were strong-minded and had natural powers, and if you put technologically advanced machines like the ones that appear it would baffle the audience. The only positive aspect is that we get to make sense of the message they are trying to convey because the voices are forceful and lucid. With all honesty, video clip number four triumphs as the worst of all. How could you relate a successful play launched in honor to King James to a bunch of plastic, moldable figures? This play is disrespectful towards Shakespeare. It’s like comparing a five star restaurant with McDonalds. Wasting a great deal of valuable time to make such a terrible play makes you conclude that the author must have been drunk when she made this or it was simply meant to be treated as a sarcastic joke.

Video clip number one and five are the best by a mile. Without a doubt the directors knew what they were doing. They are clear, concise, and excellent. Sounds and images make the right connections. Video clip number one immediately grasps our attention. Whether it’s the fog that makes us suspect of a future conflict, the lack of color that we connect with an evil force or the deafening noises from the background, they all give us the shivers. Nothing is quite clear; the witches’ faces are not seen and the smoke coming from the pot challenges the audience to attempt to follow along. Witches are supposed to be terrifying and immoral and this is exactly what we sense.
Really great, Paulina,

Similarities and differences are seen from small details to big important concepts. Act I is presented differently along these 5 videos, but they all share the “big picture”. In all the five videos, the withes keep the same dialog of meeting again when the war ends, in the presence of Macbeth. The key difference is that each one of these videos has their own perspective of how to portray this scene. The first video from the begging gives the impression of evilness and mystery. The misty air, the low lights, and dark atmospheres present a pattern of something dreadful. The fifth video illustrates this correspondingly since from the start the lighting is dark, and the video leads you right into the obscurity. Another connection is in video five, and one, the witches faces are always undercover not giving a clear view. This causes a more dramatic concept, since the mysteriousness that they carry creates a bigger effect on the viewer. A main difference between videos two and three is the scenery. Video two takes place in the beach which gives a vibe of peacefulness and purity with the sound of the ocean and the sunset. In contrast with the third video, it takes place in a hospital. The vibe one gets from this video is the total opposite; it’s a feeling of discomfort and negativity. This because of the way the hospital looks; very unclean and unpleasant. A chief difference between these two videos is that in one of the video they are witches, not they ones we expect to see in a typical Disney movie, but a recognizable one. In the other hand in the third video, they are nuns or nurses which leaves the viewer a little confused, since they are trying to portray a more modern view along the video.

The video that best captures the spirit and theme of Macbeth is the last video. This because from the begging of the video, the viewer automatically gets the sense of mysteriousness. For starters with the music, not knowing when or where the withes will appear from. The lightning adds the dark and edgy feeling to the video, as well as the dim lighting. The witches are never reviled completely, but they like the “typical witch” one imagine being. This video resembles Act 1, the best mostly because it carries on the presence of the witches along the video, as well as a feel of old-fashion.
Thanks Bianca,

Orson Welle’s video clip, along with Nicole Williamson’s video clip, and PBS’s 2010 video clip have the similarity that they all create suspense, anxiety, and mystery. The film colors, music, and darkness create suspense and anxiety in Orson Welles’ video. The witches’ sharp movements, and the fading sound of the heart rate monitor trigger anxiety and mysteriousness in the PBS’ video clip. Dissonance, the lack of light, slow movement, and whispers in Nicole Williamson’s also create mysteriousness and suspense. There are also similarities between the PBS video clip and the “amateur production of the play”. Both video clips are way too modern for Macbeth, and also depict the witches in a contemporary way since in the PBS video clip they are depicted as nurses, and in the “amateur” production, they are depicted as play dough/ Lego action figures. Even though there are various similarities, there are also various differences. In Roman Polanski’s video clip, it is very difficult to understand what the witches are doing with the arm that they bury, and the beach setting is also rare. However, in Orson Welle’s video clip the witches’ actions are clear and straightforward because they are mysterious, sneaky, and hold a statue of Macbeth.

Orson Welle’s film is the video clip that best captures the energy and spirit of Macbeth. The introduction of the harsh timpani, with the accents in the rough music, and the mix of rising sounds and instrument timbres, along with the crescendos, trills, and volume intensity spark anxiety, excitement, and mixed feelings. The black and white colors of the film also provide an antique feeling, and the slow movement of the fog gives a feeling of suspense. The witches’ voices are wicked, deep, evil, and sneaky, also creating nervousness and suspense. Since the witches also stand out in the white fog with darkness, it is a signal that darkness will be emphasized in the play. At the end, when all the witches start molding Macbeth’s sculpture, control of the witches over Macbeth is represented. Just like they had control of him while making his structure, they also had control of him when giving him the prophecy that he would be Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis, and future King.
Melanie,
