"Mrs. Viola Cuillnan was a plump woman who lived in a three-bedroom house somewhere behind the post office." plump which means fat or rounded. That was the word that Margaret used do describe her boss. From here we can see Margaret doesn't really like her. Now Mrs.Viola Cuillnan describes her, "“No, as I understand it, she can talk when she wants to but she’s usually quiet as a little mouse. Aren’t you, Margaret?” This sentence shows that, Mrs.Viola Cuillnan doesn't really happy about Margaret, because she says Margaret as a little mouse. Margaret: "I smiled at her." that is how Maragret responded to her boss. It says she smiled but it isn't really smiling it is "smiling", how do we know that? because we can know that from her last words, it says "Poor thing. No organs and couldn’t even pronounce my name correctly." Yea Mrs.Viola cannot pronounce Margaret's name, she calls her "Mary." But Margaret doesn't like it because her mother gave her "Margaret" but someone is calling her "Mary". Margaret really follows her momma we can see that from “I had to quit the job, but the problem was going to be how to do it. Momma wouldn’t allow me to quit for just any reason”. this sentence.

I think the great thing about Margaret is that she works for a woman who she doesn't like. And for Ms.Viola Cuillnan who hired Margaret as her worker even though she cannot pronounce her name. But Mrs.Viola Cuillnan later finally she understands the conflict between Margaret and her that she treats Margaret so badly. This story is all about racism, and all about black person who works for white society. And during the time period in this story i think they always had conflicts between whites, and black people.
There are two connected conflicts in this story. One of them is the racism that Margaret has lived. Th other one is a conflict Margaret, and her boss, Ms.Viola. This two person conflict is called an interpersonal conflict. At the very begging the conflict is between Margaret ans society. this conflict started since when she was young and living in a world of racism and discrimination. Margaret says that while all the white girls leaned how to be fancy and elegant, while the black girls had to learn how to do home chores. The next conflict arises when she meets her boss Ms. Viola. She starts disliking her appearance. She said “Mrs. Viola Cuillan was a plump woman who lived in a three-bedroom house somewhere behind the post office. She was singularly unattractive … and her face looked like the mask of an impish elf.” The vocabulary she uses to describe her can be used to assume that Margaret does not like her. Another aspect that conflicts with Margaret and Ms.Viola, is her extreme meticulous attitude. She is stressed out to constantly fill her need of perfection.
The story «My Name is Margaret» by Maya Angelou is about a black girl named Margaret that has an interpersonal conflict in her life, and and a direct conflict with another person in this case it’s her boss Mrs.Viola Cuillnan. Margarets is a ver young black girl living in a racist community, working in a big house of White people, which in my perspective gives her insecurity and doubts about the way she acts, thinks, and talks.Margaret only sees the negative aspects of Mrs.Cuillnan and we know this due to her way of talking about her, and looking at her.You can see that she doesn’t quite trust her boss due to the fact that black people have been discriminated and thought to be intimidated towards white people.Margaret has a big conflict/issue towards Mrs.Viola due to her changing her «identity» without asking her permission, she just did it like if Margaret was Mrs.Viola property. So she goes ahead and does something that will hurt Mrs.Viola.Due to the advantage that Mrs.Viola took of changing Margaret’s name ,Margaret decides to do something to make her realize she can’t disrespect her like that, and she does that by throwing Mrs.Cuillnan’s favorite dishes until she can gain her respect back..Margaret says «It was a dangerous practice to call a Negro anything that could be loosely construed.» She finally made Mrs.Viola realize that she can’t treat her like that and was called Margaret not Mary.We can see that in order to understand the way Margaret thinks, reacts, and feels, is important to know what she has been through and that what she feels is disrespect towards her and her race.
Thanks Nicole,

It is incorrect to judge a person's actions without first knowing the reason for their actions. In order to analyze Margaret, one needs to know her background, in an attempt to understand her feelings, which lead to her actions. We know that Margaret is a black girl living in a southern town sometime in the 1900's; by this we can conclude that she lives in a racist community. This means that she struggles with racism, feelings of insecurity and inferiority towards the white class. At the age of 10, Margaret works for a white woman, Mrs. Viola Cuillnan. The first description Margaret gives of Mrs. Cuillnan is "Mrs. Viola Cuillnan was a plump woman who lived in a three-bedroom house somewhere behind the post office. She was singularly unattractive until she smiled, and then the lines around her eyes and mouth which made her look perpetually dirty disappeared, and her face looked like the mask of an impish elf" (Angelou 1). As we can see, from the first day Margaret meets Mrs. Cuillnan, the only thing she notices are her defects. Margaret clearly dislikes her boss, even since the first day; this is surely because of Margaret's own internal conflict. She has grown up in a society in which she is discriminated for her skin color, which has caused her to resent white people. In order to cope with her own feelings of inferiority, Margaret must put Mrs. Cuillnan down, so she can feel a little more superior herself. The climax of the story occurs when a woman recommends Mrs. Cuillnan to call Margaret Mary, solely because it’s a long and inconvenient name. A person’s name is their identity, and this white woman was degrading Margaret’s identity for her own convenience. Naturally resenting her inferiority, Margaret is enraged. She goes home an describes Mrs. Cuillnan as “white, fat, old and without children” (Angelou 2) in order to feel a little better about herself. The next day, Mrs. Cuillnan calls Margaret by the name Mary. Completely enraged, Margaret says “It was a dangerous practice to call a Negro anything that could be loosely construed as insulting because of the centuries of their having been called niggers, jigs, dinges, blackbirds, crows, boots and spooks”(Angelou 3). Margaret, being an African American is especially sensitive to being called “out of her name”. Along with other African Americans, the way she grew up caused her to resent her inferiority in society, and be more affected by these offenses. In order to understand Margaret’s conflict with Mrs. Cuillnan, one must understand Margaret’s internal conflict. There is always more to a story than what meets the eye.

While working with Mrs. Cuillnan she is also segregated, “I had a glass to drink from, and it sat with Miss Glory’s on a separate shelf from the others”. This shows how she couldn’t sit with the other white people in the house, but she rather had to sit with the other African American in a different place. When Mrs. Cuillnan is at porch with her friends and Margaret is introduced one of Mrs. Cuillnan’s friends commented: “Well, that may be, but the name’s too long.
1) This sentence is missing a verb and I am not sure what you mean by 'divergence': "In the story “My Name is Margaret” by Maya Angelou the main character Margaret an African American facing an interpersonal divergence with her boss Viola Cuillnan."

2) Nor do I quite get the use of the work 'durable' in the next.

3) Remember to stay in the present tense when writing about literature: "The tightness, the flawlessness of the home boggled Margaret’s mind." "Margaret didn’t know how to react to this situation whether to cry to laugh or be angry." "This is when she felt boundaries between Ms. Cuillnan and herself where broken."
1)I am not so sure that I understand what this means: 'Fighting the fears of being controlled by a punctilious white woman who would eventually try to have the power to change her name.'

2) This is an incomplete sentence: 'A struggle known as Man Vs man in which one person stands in the way of others intentions.'

3) Two things here: 'I think any reader may feel empathy towards Margaret.' Why put in 'I'? Also, what would be a better preposition here than 'towards'?

4) In general, we write in the present tense, when writing of things we have read?

BUT, no more questions (regarding #4)... I'll tell you... we always write in the present tense when writing essays or responses to literature... The Updike example is good, but it is fiction and the same rules don't apply.

In other words, she’s facing a conflict with someone else. In this case, it is her white boss, Viola Cuillnan who is having an interpersonal conflict with Margaret. First of all, Margaret feels pretty frustrated because everything in Mrs. Cuillnan’s house has to be absolutely perfect: “The exactness of her house was inhuman. This glass went here and only here. That cup had its place and it was an art of impudent rebellion to place it anywhere else,” (My Name is Margaret) Margaret feels stressed because she is not used to such perfection and care of meticulous details. Throughout the narrative, Margaret expresses hard feelings towards Mrs. Viola, and insults her silently in her own mind. We can infer that she feels pity for Mrs. Viola because she is an old white woman who lives in a three-bedroom house with her husband without children and with lots of money. We can infer that Margaret has an insulting and sarcastic attitude towards the Cuillnan’s family because she feels envy that they have all that they want and feel superior and powerful. “She was singularly unattractive until she smiled, and then the lines around her eyes and mouth which made her look perpetually dirty disappeared, and her face looked like the mask of an impish elf,” (My Name is Margaret) Margaret clearly dislikes Mrs. Viola Cuillnan and doesn’t feel satisfied working in her home. Most importantly, the climax of the conflict occurs when Margaret serves the ladies in the porch and a friend of Mrs. Viola recommends her to call Margaret: “Mary” instead of her real name because its very long. Margaret feels great disrespect from Mr. Cuillnan’s part because she doesn’t believe she has the right to shorten her name just for her convenience. “That horrible woman would never have the chance to call me Mary because if I was starving, I’d never work for her. I decided I wouldn’t pee on her if her heart was on fire,” (My Name is Margaret) Margaret wanted to quit her job, and couldn’t find a solution until Bailey solved her dilemma and showed her Mrs. Cuillnan’s favorite dishes, as an option for revenge. Margaret then drops Mrs. Viola’s dishes and at last, she calls Margaret by her real name. “I could never absolutely describe to Bailey what happened next, because each time I got to the part where she fell on the floor and screwed up her ugly face to cry, we burst out laughter,” (My Name is Margaret) At the end, Margaret is happy because she has solved her dilemma and is satisfied with her decision and the lessons she taught Mrs. Viola Cuillnan.
Great Melanie,
