After this incident bigger tried to figure out how to get out of this. His excuses were not very good and the police finally caught him. One advice I would give bigger to make his plan better is to first use a little more logic and don’t take your bosses drunk daughter to her room. Second don’t try to abuse her. If bigger would have done as the advice says all his problems with this incident would have disappeared. Another advice I would have given bigger was to clean up the furnace. Whites were afraid of Blacks, and Blakcs were afraid of Whites. Blakcs were poor, and doing 3D jobs, but whites were rich, and they supervised black. Bigger knows that but he gets errors by many events happen to him. The first error occurs when Bigger asks to Mary that where is her room. "Where is your room?. he whispered" (page 95). Think about it, a black worker asks a white girl about where is her room? I don't think that was smart act. Anyways he gets into her room, but Mrs. Dalton comes to her room, and and Bigger gets scraed that if Mrs.Dalton realizes that Bigger is in Mary's room, so he tries to make Mary quiet and puts pillow on her face. But Mary dies by pillow, she couldn't breath. He tries to hide that event, so he puts her in closet, and later he chops her head off. That was his 2nd mistake, because if he just went away from Mary with pillow on her face, people would think that she died by accident, and there was no evidence that Bigger killed her, but Bigger was too afriad, so he chops her head off. Now the Bigger's error becomes bigger. He tries to escape, and that was also a mistake. He could just stay, and watch how the situation goes. If he leaves and people realize Mary's dead body, everyone is going to think that Bigger killed her. He lied, and the event gets bigger, he tries to hide, and escape, and now what he caanot even control it. I guess now the Native son story will go how he solves that problem. And i hope Bigger doesn't make any mistake like that, and doesn't try to hide things or lie to people.
Thanks Brian,

Just the act of killing her was a great mistake, but in the midst of his panic and fear, he makes the situation worse. Bigger's first mistake was burning Mary's body in the Dalton's furnace. Mary's body was the main evidence of his crime, so he should have been sure to get rid of all traces of her body. Instead, Bigger burns her in her family's furnace which is at their house, the first place they would look for evidence. The next mistake Bigger makes is making up a story that would be contradicted by a white man. Bigger tells Mr. Dalton and the private investigator: "Jan didn't leave at Forty-sixth Street; he rode with us"(page101). This is where Bigger's lies about Jan begin. Bigger thought he could create evidence to show that Jan was guilty of Mary's disappearance, but he thought wrong. In Chicago in the 1930's, a white man's word had 100 times more credibility than a black man's word. Once Jan gave his story, Bigger would be in trouble. Bigger did not realize this would happen until he saw Jan in Mr. Dalton's office, talking to the investigator. Next, Bigger involves someone else: Bessie. He tells her he killed Mary. It is bad enough just to tell someone, as no secret can be kept; but Bessie is a a nervous girl who is bound to crack if she is put under pressure. Bigger then decides to wright a ransom note asking for $10,000. This is a huge mistake, he was already in a critical situation, and he decided to complicate it even more. Once Bogger realized he was going to be caught, he decided to flee. Ofcourse if there was suspicion of his guilt, his disappearance would clear any doubt of his guilt. Bigger Thomas made many mistakes when dealing with this situation, which eventually got him caught. You can run from the truth, but you can't hide it.
Thanks Sol,

Another mistake that Bigger did was not completing his job assignments, which included putting the ashes in the trash, he would have gotten away with it because now with the ashes taken away Bigger had a bigger chance of not getting caught. Bigger would be safer if he had left her dead on the bed and people might have thought that she died because of a heart attack because the alcohol made the heart pump blood faster. Finally another mistake he did was to chase Jan with a gun. We can see that Bigger really did this when the narrator says, “ Jan came forward again and Bigger drew his gun. Jan stopped; his face whitened”,(p.197). This was a horrible decision because it let Jan have a great inference that Bigger killed Mary. All this happened very spontaneously Bigger never imagined coming across a situation like taking Mary to her bedroom when drunk. Bigger’s first mistake was to stay in Mary room, he should’ve taken her to her room and left her there, or asked for help. But things got out of control when Bigger was forced to put a pillow over her face, which resulted in her death. If Bigger would have been cautious instead of going with the flow he could’ve prevented Mary’s death and future problems. Fear and panic was spinning around in Bigger’s head causing him to not think through how to cover up that he had killed Mary. With anxiety he took his fears out by using violence, he cut Mary into small pieces, and took the bones to the furnace. The first mistake that he made was to hide in the room with her when she was drunk and unconscious. He knew that she was in a very vulnerable condition and that her body was much weaker than normal. In other words, she was more sensible than usual because of her mental condition and the amount of alcohol in her body. Her mental condition was also poor because she was unconscious, so this meant that she would try to do whatever she wanted without control and possession over her own acts. Bigger knew and felt that someone would enter the room sooner or later, but because of his physical attraction towards her he didn’t want to leave, he wanted to take advantage of the situation rather than to be cautious. If he would of written a more efficient letter with better handwriting. The letter he had just made was written in a short amount of time, and was poorly written. If he would of taken more of his time to write a better letter he would of made the letter even more credible. His future is limited by the fact that he did not finish school and that the racist policies of the time force him to live in poverty. When Bigger takes a job with the Dalton's, he is excited about being able to get close to the "rich and famous". Although Bigger's dream is to become an aviator, instead he has to work for a white family, knowing that he will never be offered the type of job that will allow him to offer his family substantial support. His lack of education and naiveness makes his murder attempt an utter disaster. First mistake Bigger commits is staying in the room with Mary. He knows he is attracted to her and that there is a boundary between whites and blacks that may not be crossed. In the 1930’s race relations in America were very strained. He should have let Mary in her room and immediately gone home. If he had gone home he would have never placed the pillow on top of Mary’s face causing her to suffocate. Even if he had stayed he should have taken advantage of Mrs. Dalton's blindness, walk around her, and leave the room. Even if he had killed her, he should have thought about what to do instead of rushing to conclusions. I think he should have left the room and act as if he never knew what happened, thus avoiding him criminal charges. "Jan didn't leave at Forty-sixth Street; he rode with us…"(pg.101) Bigger thought that by saying this he would not face charges. However this was a big mistake because in the 1930’s a Black person was always seen as guilty before a white one. Burning the body in the furnace of the Dalton's made it easy to find the victim. He should have taken her body to the forest and burned it there. Bigger tries to cover his tracks but he is clumsy and rather than taking the opportunity to leave town with the money that was in Mary's purse, he drags his girlfriend Bessie Mears into the plot. Involving more people into the situation makes it more difficult to control. Instead of being greedy he should have been happy with the money in the purse. I think he should have kept quiet and pretended not to know anything about the crime instead of making lame excuses. "Maybe she didn't go to Detroit." (pg.143). If you are going to lie you must make sure that what you say makes sense and you do not throw out random thoughts. At the end the truth always comes to the surface and running from the problem won’t get you anywhere.
