Please choose one of these monologues by Shakespeare. Spend time reading it and do so slowly and outloud. Write out a paragraph in which you briefly paraphrase and summarize the piece. Then write a second paragraph in which you consider the benefits or drawbacks of Shakespeare's use of iambic pentameter as opposed to your own translation. Could he have made the same point using meter-less prose or does the rhythm of the piece add to the overall effect? Consider whether he could have worked in metaphors, images and figures of speech as successfully had he written it in a more 'modern', free-flowing style? Are there advantages to using such strict guides as ten syllables per line or is it just showy and unnecessary? Feel free to use quotes to make your point. Shakespeare monologues
